It's time to begin
Confirmation Preparation for Candidates for 2022

Dear Candidates and Families,

Usually we would have met by now, to start the process together and talk about all the steps.  However, because this is a different kind of year, we are beginning the preparation in a different format.

If you have not heard, I have taken the decision to retire, which I will be doing at the end of this month, on December 31.  While I am giving you the materials to begin, you will be continuing with other members of the staff.  Renata Sosin will be the primary contact through the next semester.

In this email, I'll spell out for you the steps to get started.  Confirmation preparation is a two year process.

I suggest that you begin by having some conversations together - candidates and families -  about how to make the most of this process.  I'm including items to talk about in this email.

There are several components to the process:
  • Class work that you complete either in Religious Education or in St. Emily School this year and next.
  • Coming to mass on Sundays.  It is possible to come to mass (by signing up) while we are still using pandemic precautions.  However, if you cannot come to the church, you can watch the online feed from either parish and join in the prayers at home.
  • Learning more about prayer.  Religious Ed students received their new prayerbooks.  St. Emily School students will do so shortly.
  • Engaging in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy and journaling about them.  More information about this is below.
  • Events such as the Confirmation retreat.  Due to the pandemic and the change in personnel, it is difficult to give specific times of the year for these events, but they will be scheduled on site or remotely when the time comes.
In order to begin your discussion, please do the following:
  • Download this booklet which explains the whole process.
  • Watch this video together:

Sacraments 101: Confirmation (why we're confirmed)

    (why we're confirmed)

  • Discuss why you would like to be confirmed.  Talk about the steps. Make sure that you understand the process.
  • Talk about choosing a patron saint and sponsor.  Who did others in your family pick?  Why did they?
  • Read the passage from Matthew 25 on page 5 of the booklet.  Discuss what it means and how it relates to the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.
  • Watch this video and try to point out all the works of mercy you see happening in this short film.

  • Go to the journal link and see how easy it is to fill out a journal entry.

There is a neighbor (about a block from St. Emily church) who needs help with snow shoveling this winter.  Contact David Mika if you are interested.

  • Bookmark the journal link on your phone so that you always have it with you.
The most important part of preparing for Confirmation is asking the Holy Spirit to strengthen you with his seven gifts.  God won't force us to accept a gift.  God is just waiting for us to open our hearts and accept what he is trying to give us. Pray this prayer every day, asking for the Holy Spirit and God will transform your life.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.

Lord,
by the light of the Holy Spirit
you have taught the hearts of your faithful.
In the same Spirit
help us to relish what is right
and always rejoice in your consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
