March News and Events
The most comprehensive center for family and professional caregiving.
And the  GuidingLights 2020  Point of Light  Award Goes to

Anne Browning!

Anne has been a Champion for Guiding Lights since the charity's beginning 10 years ago!
Since then Anne has been the Volunteer Coordinator for every event held by the Center including our Pig Pickings, our Charity Polo Classic events and our annual Share to Care fund raiser which this year had 425 attendees!! (You need a lot of volunteers to carry that off and Anne does such a great job!)
Anne also is the creator and coordinator of the Triangle's Stockings of Joy program which serves isolated seniors in our community and brings gifts, cheer and support to them during the holidays.
Anne is a humble, unsung hero who works tirelessly, often behind the scenes, in support of the seniors that we all care so much about.  For all these reasons Anne is this year's 2020 Point of Light Award Winner! Be sure to congratulate her and thank her for all she does!

Do You Know Who I Am?
7.0 CEU Dementia Training

On February 11 we had 7 professional caregivers participate in our interactive training. Together they came to understand the disease and why those living with Alzheimer's and associated dementias act the way they do and simple tips for providing quality care for them. Following are a few photos from the attendees as they learned about the disease and how to establish comfort and trust between the caregiver and the person living with the disease.

Classes are scheduled for the following dates this year:

March 10
May 12
June 9
July 14
September 8
October 13
November 10
December 8

For Family Caregivers our course is available from the comfort of home.

Carla, a family caregiver had this to say about the course:
"Thank you for sharing the GuidingLights training for dementia. WOW!!! I was affected and am helped. I have a much better appreciation for the spectrum of what life can look like and how to better care for my mom. Your training has also helped me toward a profoundly more compassionate and agreeable response to her current needs."

Welcome to our Nurse Aide 1 Training Program participants!

For 6 weeks, 3 days a week, students have been participating in a robust 146-hour curriculum which exceeds the basic standards of the North Carolina DHSR model.
Students have shuffled between our skills lab and the classroom under the guidance of Cherie Hylton, our RN NA1 Instructor, learning and practicing techniques which will enable them to work in resident care, complete the state certification exam and meet the requirements for listing on the N.C. Nurse Aide 1 Registry.

As you can see, our curriculum is innovative and interactive, making the experience more thorough and more enjoyable for our students.

If you have any questions or need further details, please contact us at info@guidinglightsnc.org or you may call 919.371.2062 and ask to speak to Shelly Slaczka.

What if...
we looked at a senior not as a list of diseases but
instead as a spirit housed in a body that has
weathered storms?

The Edge of Aging podcast produces quick, "snackable" episodes that focus on different topics of healthcare to include long-term, acute, and community-based care. We dare to ask: what if we reimagined how we provide care for older adults and their caregivers? Hosted by Nicole Clagett and Cooper Linton.
