REDUCE - Help Your House "Lose" Weight!

Often when working with a client we literally remove hundreds of pounds of stuff from their home! This results in the house feeling and looking lighter and my clients usually saying they "feel" lighter too.

Here are three simple questions to ask yourself to help you reduce the amount of stuff you have in any room of your home so you too can lose those "extra pounds"!

1. "How many do I need"?

For any item you have multiples of, ask yourself:  " How many do I ne ed"?

As an example, here here are some photos taken over the years of items my clients had in overabundance. Things such as gift boxes, bags, baseball hats, etc. You may be amazed at the space  you can clear by letting go of the excess.

2. "When was this last used"?
Ask yourself, "when was the last time I wore this outfit, used this serving tray, used this bread machine, looked at these National Geographic's,
listened to this CD, watched this DVD or that my family played this game"?

If the answer is two or more years, there is a good chance you won't ever use them again. Try to be very honest with yourself about how likely it is that you will use it. Remember, if you aren't using these items they are just taking up your valuable space.

3. "Do I like this"?
Maybe you prefer to follow the recommendation from the book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and ask yourself "Does this bring me Joy"?

Consider whether you enjoy the item and if wearing, using or looking at it actually brings you any pleasure. Our tastes and interests often change over time and these items may no longer meet our needs or fit our lifestyle and taste.  Your home should be a reflection of the things that are truly important to you now.

If you apply these three questions to items in your home, I promise you will successfully shed some of those unwanted pounds!

Categories to Consider:

Here are some examples of categories to consider in your quest for extra space and a "lighter" home.
  • Clothes
  • Handbags
  • Outerwear
  • Toys/Games
  • Pots/Pans/Bakeware and Cookware
  • Books
  • Toiletries
  • Office Supplies
  • Cords/Electronics
  • Linens/Blankets
  • Luggage
  • And literally any other item in your home!
As you ask yourself the aforementioned questions, keep in mind that we are not meant to keep everything that comes into our homes. Letting go of things that no longer meet our needs is an important step toward keeping your home uncluttered and organized.

I hope you enjoy the process of helping to get your home "in shape" for the New Year!
