May 2022
Greetings!

Well, there’s no ball dropping in Times Square, but the count down to that other end-of-the-year celebration/event is upon us! With less than a month of classes left at Mother Seton, the students are wrapping up final projects and looking forward to all the events that mark this time of year, from graduation (for both our 8th grade class of 2022 and the Pre-Kindergarteners!) to field day. I hope summer provides an opportunity for all of our families and alums to relax and little and enjoy the slower, or at least different, pace of summer.

Meanwhile, our grads both recent and not-so-recent have been garnering awards and honors that we’re pleased to share with you.

Our next E-News will focus on our Class of 2022 as well as our high school graduates, the MSS Class of 2018, so stay tuned!

MSS Class of 1969
Class of 2018 & 2019
Mother Seton was well-represented at a recent National Honor Society induction at Catoctin High School. Juniors Jameson Doll, Mackenzie Orndorff, and Nathan Kovalcik, all Class of 2019, achieved this honor, as did Seniors Brendan Ott, Mia Ferraro, Jacob Hartness, Keola Evans, and Raphaela Smaldone, all class of 2018. Congratulations to all of you for qualifying for this award, which requires demonstrated achievements in academics, service, and leadership!

Larisa Tayler (MSS 2017)
While attending Central Connecticut State University, Larisa received the award for earning the highest GPA in the Sophomore class for her major, Exercise Science. Although Larisa is in her freshman year, she accumulated enough transfer credits that, combined with her first-semester classes, bumped her into the Sophomore Class. Larisa plans to parlay her major into a career as an athletic trainer or chiropractor. Congratulations, Larisa!
Hannah Hartness (MSS 2015)
Hannah Hartness, Class of 2015, and currently a junior at Penn State was recognized with an Outstanding Student Award by the university’s LEAD Society for personally chartering the Pennsylvania State FFA Alumni and Supporters Chapter this year. Way to go, Hannah!
Hall of Fame Inductees
I was privileged to attend the Mount’s Academic Circle of Excellence Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction on March 5th. Two Mother Seton grads were among those honored. Frank Ryan, Class of 1965, and Christine Gelles, Class of 1985, were inducted into the Hall of Fame, Frank for the Richard J. Bolte Sr. School of Business and Christine for the College of Liberal Arts.
Francis Ryan (MSS 1965)
Frank Ryan (Class of 1968), a CPA, graduated from the Mount Summa Cum Laude in 1973 and received his Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland in 1977. He served in the Marine Reserves for many years, retiring as a much-decorated Colonel, and was called back to active duty in 2004, including a tour in Iraq. He was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2016 and continues in that position. In 2014, Frank walked 2806 miles across America to raise awareness of children’s emotional and developmental issues. With his wife Sherrie, he is the father of four children and grandfather to nine. Frank’s sister Jeannie also graduated from MSS, Class of 1968.
As long as we’re discussing the Class of 1965, here’s a throwback.

Christine Gelles (MSS 1985)
After graduating from the Mount, Christine worked for the United States Department of Energy for 23 years. Her primary responsibilities involved implementing and overseeing the safe and compliant cleanup of contaminated lands and nuclear waste resulting from the research and production of nuclear weapons during the Cold War era. Her responsibilities in her leadership positions included creating policies, negotiating compliance agreements, testifying before Congress, and serving as a spokesperson for DOE at conferences and public meetings. While the majority of her career was spent in DOE Headquarters, she served as a DOE site office manager in New Mexico in 2015. In 2016, Christine left Federal service to join Longenecker and Associates, a firm that undertakes projects similar to the kind she managed at DOE. Christine is the mother of Kayleigh, and recently moved to Hilton Head, S.C. with her fiancé, Frank. Christine’s brother Greg (Class of 1982) is also a Mother Seton graduate. Her sister Amy attended Mother Seton through 1986 (6th grade), before transferring to St. Francis Xavier.
