ASTC:Notes recently heard from a reader inquiring about codes and design standards for corridors used in performing arts. As with anything else related to performance buildings, the code minimum is rarely sufficient for the job. Good design considers the way circulation routes are used….

Performing arts spaces are complicated. Don’t assume a theatre consultant is merely an equipment specifier. Gain their expertise early, not when it is too late to fix problems. In the end the consultant’s fee is money well spent and the resulting building will be much better.

ASTC has created a mentorship program for students so they may learn about our profession, and with any luck, better expose students to a career path they may not know exists. The first student has now been through the program in New York City.

The American Society of Theatre Consultants (ASTC) is pleased to announce Scott Crossfield as a new Fellow of the Society. Fellowship is the highest honor the ASTC can bestow upon a member. Elevation to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the member as an individual, but also elevates before the public and the profession those individuals who have made significant contributions to the ASTC for a substantial number of years. Scott Crossfield has a distinguished body of work in performing arts design. He has consulted on the design of over 600 performing arts venues. He had been an ASTC Board member and Vice President.

The next installment of the ASTC-USITT Venue Renovation Challenge will occur during the USITT Conference in St. Louis, MO scheduled for March 16-18, 2023. The event is held in even numbered years, and will follow a successful, albeit virtual presentation in 2021.
This is an excellent opportunity for university students to team with an ASTC mentor to learn more about the work and influence of a Theatre Consultant on performing arts spaces. This is a theoretical project, where students design a renovation or remodel of an existing venue. Projects are submitted electronically then presented in a live setting during USITT. There are two cash prizes, the Edgar L. Lustig Honor Award, and the Director’s Award.
