January 2020

Pastor John
COVENANT  RENEWAL

In 1663 Richard Alliene, a Puritan, published Vindicate Pietatis or, A Vindication of Godliness in the Greater Strictness and Spirituality of It. In 1753, it was again published in John Wesley's A Christian Library. Wesley used the chapter "The Application of the Whole" on Monday August 11, 1755, in what probably was the first real celebration of the Covenant Service in the Methodist movement. My first introduction to the service was in Wilmington NC at Wesley Memorial UMC when the service began at 11 pm December 31, and finished soon after midnight on January 1 of a New Year ! What a great way to welcome in the New Year by renewing my commitment to serving the Lord. It was also followed by a full - course southern breakfast ! January 2020 presents all of us with a tremendous opportunity to serve the Lord ! We will celebrate Holy Communion and pray this Covenant Renewal Service Prayer on Sunday January 5- 2020 at both 8:30 am & 11:00 am Worship services :

I AM NO LONGER MY OWN, BUT THINE
PUT ME TO WHAT THOU WILT, RANK ME WITH WHOM THOU WILT,
PUT ME TO DOING, PUT ME TO SUFFERING
LET ME BE EMPLOYED BY THEE OR LAID ASIDE FOR THEE,
EXALTED FOR THEE OR BROUGHT LOW FOR THEE.
LET ME HAVE ALL THINGS, LET ME HAVE NOTHING.
I FREELY AND HEARTILY YIELD ALL THINGS
TO THY PLEASURE AND DISPOSAL.
AND NOW, O GLORIOUS AND BLESSED GOD,
FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT,
THOU ART MINE, AND I AM THINE. SO BE IT.
AND THE COVENANT WHICH I HAVE MADE ON EARTH,
LET IT BE RATIFIED IN HEAVEN. AMEN

May this be the best year for you, your family, and our Higgins church family for serving the Lord with great joy !

Children's Ministry
Help Needed!
For the past several years, Jim and Becky Ashton have been coordinating our Nursery volunteers, making sure the nursery is staffed with trained, vetted, volunteers every Sunday morning, but they are expecting their first grand-baby in February and will be spending a lot of time enjoying that milestone.
So, we are in need of a Volunteer Coordinator for the nursery.
We are also in need of a couple of volunteers.

If you would like to volunteer once each Sunday in the nursery or if you would like to coordinate the volunteers, please contact Kim Garland, telephone (828) 682-2835, or by email, [email protected].

Caring for the youngest of our congregation and their parents is one of the most important jobs we have!

Bus y Christmas Season!
Our Higgins Kids Ministry had a very wonderful, busy Christmas season!  We celebrated Christmas with the residents of The Yancey House Assisted Living, we caroled around town and we went to The Grove Park Inn to see the Gingerbread House display.

We are looking forward to another wonderful year of learning more about Jesus in 2020!  Please pray for us!
Music Ministry
A big thank you goes out to everyone involved with the music this Christmas.  It was so meaningful and beautiful!  Thank you all for what you do and for sharing the love of Christ with others through music, bells, instruments, etc.

Membership Sundays & Class Coming Soon
I would like to invite you to join Higgins Memorial UMC on either Sunday, January 12 or 19, at either the 8:30 a.m. service or the 11: 00 a.m. service. If you have been attending Higgins, but have not had the opportunity to take the vows of membership, you are invited to a Membership Class that will be held Wednesday, January 15, from 6-7:30 p.m. A make-up class will be scheduled for January 22. Each class member will receive a copy of James Harnish's excellent book, A Disciple's Path - Deepening Your Relationship With Christ. The primary vow is to confess your faith in Jesus Christ and to promise to uphold the Higgins United Methodist Church with your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness.

If you are interested in joining our church or attending the membership class, please contact me by January 12th at [email protected] or by telephone at 828-221-4646.

Library Notes
Well, this year went quickly, didn't it? So many good books, and yet, so many left unread. Oh well, so many more good ones still ahead. This year, lets begin by choosing a good devotional book for the coming year. The church has so many for you to choose from, it would take better than ten years to go through them all. And they are there for the taking - for a whole year you can borrow one of those devotionals. Please do! We have a world of wisdom at our fingertips - free!
A thought for the coming year. Would you be willing to share a book when you read one you've thought exceptional? The beauty of this idea is that there are truly so many good books out there and none of us know of them all. You could tell me about it, or write about it, or even loan/give it to the library. Anything to keep us reading good material. A church wide effort to further us on our effort to follow the Lord and learn from others experiences or thoughts.
Here's an excerpt with which to begin the New Year, from "Jesus Calling" by Sarah Young:
Begin each day alone with me, so you can experience the reality of My Presence
As you spend time with me, the way before you opens up step by step.
Arise from the stillness of our communion , and gradually begin your journey
through the day. Hold My hand in deliberate dependence on me, and I will smooth out the path in front of you. . . .. .
"The Greatest of These is Love". That's the theme of What Would Jesus Do. Let's keep this truth in our minds as we go daily through our decisions, large and small. Let's make 2020 a year of Love. We can change the world one kind word or deed at a time.

Have an incredible New Year!
