Faculty Spotlight
an assistant professor and founding Chair of the department of Nutrition and Dietetics, CHP. She recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants on how PAs can identify and help treat childhood overweight and obesity; in the Early Childhood Education Journal on how preschool teachers’ and child caregivers’ approaches to food and eating vary by cultural background and in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior on now preschool teachers’ attitudes and mealtime practices can impact children’s eating habits; and two articles in NASN School Nurse on the subject of sugar-sweetened beverages. Professor Cooper is currently studying dietary intake during COVID-19 and was recently a guest on Sirius XM Doctor Radio where she discussed food and nutrition among Americans during COVID-19.
Jonathan Brown, JD, is the founder and director of the Food and Beverage Law Clinic in the Elisabeth Haub School of Law. Law students in the Clinic provide pro bono representation to farmers, food and beverage entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations on transactional legal matters. The Clinic has recently been awarded a grant from the Department of Agriculture to provide legal services and training to rural small businesses in upstate New York. Under Professor Brown’s leadership, the Clinic, in collaboration with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Shearman & Sterling LLP, has offered pro bono legal services and resources to farms and food businesses affected by the COVID-19 crisis. The Clinic also recently collaborated with American Farmland Trust to host a training program on farm leasing and conservation practices.
Faculty News
Ana Amaya, PhD (CHP, NYC) co-authored “Regional Cooperation is Essential to Combatting Health Emergencies in the Global South” in Globalization and Health. This commentary argues that regional organizations in the Global South should take a greater role in supporting countries address the COVID-19 pandemic, and outlines areas for action and cooperation.
Jillian McDonald (Art Department, NYC) received a 2020 Canada Council for the Arts Explore and Create Grant for her new film work titled “The Tunnel,” which will be filmed in New York, Newfoundland, and the American Southwest.
Nils Myszkowski, PhD (Psychology, NYC) published the “Aesthetic Sensitivity” chapter in The Oxford Handbook of Empirical Aesthetics. This chapter examines the construct, training, and development of aesthetic sensitivity and discusses the relations between aesthetic sensitivity and mental ability, as well as with personality.
Claire Panetta, PhD (Sociology/Anthropology NYC) published ‘Digging in the Water?’ Grassroots Urbanism, the Egyptian State, and the Politics of Heritage-Making in Post-Revolution Cairo”, in the International Journal of Heritage Studies. The article is an anthropological analysis of a grassroots heritage workshop held in 2016 in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Cairo.
Joshua Cohen, PhD (Biology, NYC) published a paper in Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, Jan, 2021. The paper describes four new species of mammals from 90 million years ago during the time of dinosaurs.
Undergraduate students Lyric O. Wyan (BS Forensic Science '19) and Jozlyn M. Charland (BS Forensic Science) together with their research advisor Elmer Mojica, PhD (Chemistry, NYC and Pleasantville) published Comparative study of the extraction methods for the instrumental analysis of bee propolis in LSUA Undergraduate Journal in Teaching and Research 2021.

Covid-19 Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research Award
We are seeking to integrate faculty expertise across disciplines and from each of the six schools at Pace University. The goal of this grant program is to seed new research in an interdisciplinary manner. The program requires the research be collaborative to maximize novel and creative thinking about every aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic. We envision this program to be a forum for studying societal responses to the current crisis, recovery, resilience, and the reimagining of our lives and work.

On Wednesday, February 24 and Wednesday, March 10, join Eric Kessler, PhD and Bennett Gershman, JD, for their Distinguished Professor presentations, hosted by the Office of Research.

The title of Distinguished Professor is the highest honor Pace University bestows upon a faculty member who has a sustained record of extensive, extraordinary contributions in research, teaching and service. It requires independent recommendations from nationally and internationally known scholars in the candidate's field. 

In honor of this year's Distinguished Professors—Eric Kessler, PhD, and Bennett Gershman, JD—the Office of Research is hosting presentations by each professor. Each presentation will last one hour, and focus on a subject related each professor's area of expertise.

Workshop Announcement
Effective mentoring practices optimize research experiences for both students and faculty. This workshop is designed for faculty who mentor undergraduates in research to illustrate best practices and overcome problems that arise during the mentoring process.
 
Dr. Avrom Caplan, Associate Provost for Research will lead the workshops based on training he received from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Research Experiences
