Gallery Tour: It's Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection
Printmaking is a technique that dates back centuries. In the early days of cinema, the movie poster itself became its own art form, using screen printing to design and mass-produce images that would encapsulate a dramatic film.  It’s Alive!  brings together dozens of these posters from the first decades of cinema with particular attention to horror and film noir. On this guided tour learn more about the poster designs and films themselves, along with a few insights about the collector, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett.

The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes offers an interactive experience combining science with history and culture to bring to life the historic underpinnings of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich and vibrant stories.

Museum visitors will learn how Sherlock Holmes, a scientific expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial observations of clues others missed to solve some of his era’s most puzzling mysteries. His practices and techniques, created in the mind of doctor-turned-author Conan Doyle, encouraged a change in the way police work was conducted, and remain in practice today.

Guests will be transported into Sherlock Holmes’ London to solve a mystery in a world newly introduced to his groundbreaking methods, and then transported back into present day with a pop culture gallery that shows Sherlock Holmes in all his manifestations from books to movies.

Notes from the Underground: Poster Design from the Hippie Era
In the summer of 2017, the Columbia Museum of Art acquired over 100 rock posters from the collection of design historian Mel Byars. A selection from this gift is on view.
Each of these ephemeral objects represents an event — a musical show at a venue that encouraged dancing, psychedelic light shows, and hallucinatory drug taking. The designers of these posters created complicated visual experiences with image mashups and vibrating color combinations.

Free with membership or admission. Join today! About Our Collection Most museums organize art by era or location, but the CMA's Collection has been reimagined around common themes like "Masterpieces" and "Art and Identity."
