Nayla moved up here all the way from Ecuador three years ago. The first year was a struggle in a lot of ways. Culture shock can be extremely difficult and adjusting to it can take a long time. I was Nayla’s mentor her first year at Sanborn. I got to see firsthand how difficult things were for her.

However, Nayla overcame. All the support she’s gotten, all the time she’s put in, and more importantly her own willingness to push forward has allowed her to accomplish so much in these past few years. I’ve had Nayla in my class since her sophomore year. She was welcome in all her classes but having her in Spanish class was a genuine joy. She got the opportunity to share her culture with her peers, and her peers got to see the perspective of a native Spanish speaker.

Nayla is a member of Spanish Honor Society. Her extracurriculars include piano lessons and kickboxing. She plans to enlist in the army after graduation and is already training for it! Her goal is to someday become a forensic detective.

Here are just a few thoughts from some of the many teachers who loved having her in class.
“Nayla is self-motivated and curious. A very conscientious student, she has been a joy to get to know and to teach.” – Mrs. Heather Wheeler

“Nayla is sweet, funny, and unafraid to try new things. She overcame a lot when transitioning here. But, this only made her stronger. I was immediately impressed with her talent and abilities to take on the challenges presented to her in Ceramics. I know we "had a time of it" trying to communicate, but she learned so fast. I am glad I got to teach her. Nayla, keep making art and best of luck in your future endeavors.” – Ms Vitolo

“Nayla has really stepped up her game! Nayla is completing her work before the due dates so she can conference to get feedback in order to make her work tip-top. Nayla is passionate about equity and equality and is discovering how the government and citizens impact these issues.” – Mrs. Michelle Wheeler

“I have had the pleasure of working with and getting to know Nayla, as her ESL teacher, when she moved here from Ecuador her sophomore year. In those few years, I have seen an amazing transformation from a shy, quiet student, to a student who is full of wonder, confidence, and has a zest for life!! When Nayla gets to know you she opens up and is quite the conversationalist. She is curious about the world around her and advocates for herself when she needs to. Without a doubt, Nayla will accomplish great things in her life! I am so proud of you Nayla and I can’t wait to hear where life takes you!!” - Ms. Johnson

I am so proud of Nayla, not just in all the work she’s put in to succeed, but also in seeing how totally the Sanborn community has welcomed her in and helped her along the way. Nayla moved here looking for opportunity, and she’s made the most of every opportunity that’s come across her way. She will be truly missed, and we all wish the best for her future endeavors!

¡Buenas Suerte!
Senior Spotlight: Lilli Fowler
An Article by Staff Member Bari Boisvert
Every few years there is that one student who sets themselves apart from everyone else and is not just a student in my classroom, but someone with whom I have forged a meaningful relationship that I know will last long after they graduate from high school. Lilli Fowler is definitely that student.

Lilli is one of the most genuine students I have taught at Sanborn and if I was a high school student, I know that we would totally be besties. Lilli has a great sense of humor and that is what I like about her. This year, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sanborn assigned students to a mentor who was someone other than a current academic teacher. Lilli was assigned to me and diligently signed up for her time slots to meet with me and check in. In our meetings we used the time to catch up, for me to answer important questions about school climate, and to laugh. When I say laugh, I mean hysterical laughter; something neither of us have been really able to do in such trying times. This is what sets Lilli apart..

Mrs. Michelle Wheeler said of Lilli, “a truly honorable quality of Lilli is that she wants to understand where people are coming from- especially when it doesn’t align with her beliefs. Lilli understands that in order to move forward with the goal of equality for all, common ground must first be found. It is no surprise that Lilli is interested in deaf-culture as it blends her passions of understanding others and bringing groups together for the betterment of all.”

I asked Lilli which teachers made an impact on her at Sanborn. She said of Mr. Eric Isben-Johnson, that she found him to be very inspiring. His help touched many hearts and he always led with a good moral compass. Her time in his class was short lived but his impact on me will last a lifetime. Of Mrs. Boisvert, she said,” “she has made my time as a Sanborn memorable. I appreciate her sarcasm and wit. But more than that, the kindness she has shown me throughout the years. I only had her for my Sophomore year, regardless we stayed in touch. She took me seriously and provided structure like no other. This helped me thrive. I will miss her immensely.”

Lilli’s dream is to be an ASL interpreter and will be attending the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology to study American Sign Language - English Interpretation. Lilli said that there is nothing she will miss more than the bonds and relationships she has created with her peers and teachers and will truly miss her friends. And though she knows she will make new friends, these are the people who have helped shape me into the person she will be someday.

We will miss you too, Lilli, but we are also confident that the world is in good hands with you paving the way for so many others to be successful.
Senior Spotlight: Gabriella Dones
An Article by Staff Member Bari Boisvert
When I think of Gabriella Dones, the first thing that comes to mind is that laugh...Gabby has a laugh that is rich and contagious. I knew if Gabby was coming to class, I was bound to spend much of the time laughing as well. I met Gabby at the beginning of her sophomore year when she joined my English class. While she admittedly was not a fan of English, she did try her best and that’s all that I could ask for.

Gabby plans to go to college after high school, although she isn’t quite sure what she will major in at this time. She said the thought of it is pretty scary to her, but once she figures out what she wants to do career-wise, she is going to work hard and travel. She said that during the pandemic and these “fun times” being stuck at home, she’s realized that we only have one life and she wants to make the best of it by doing what she wants, traveling to where she wants, and living her life to the fullest. Those are some pretty admirable heights to have set.

Gabby said that Sanborn has shown her different courses that helped her figure out what she wanted to do with her future. Her culinary courses at SST and various college fairs have helped her to decide what she wants to do education and career-wise. Along with the advice she’s received from teachers and the classes she’s taken, she feels that Sanborn has helped steer her in the right direction.

I asked Gabby which teachers at Sanborn made the most impact on her time here. She said:
Mr.Croteau: John is always there when you need him, he always knows how to put a smile on my face and he gives good advice.
Mr.Bradd:  I’ve known Mr.Bradd since the fourth grade and since then he’s always believed in me, never let me give up, and always pushed me to keep going.
Mrs.Boisvert: Mrs.Boisvert, is definitely the person who knows how to set me straight even if she doesn't sugar coat it. I’ll be honest, sophomore year she scared me, but looking back, the only reason she scared me is because she was the only person who said things as they were even if it’s not what we wanted to hear. We’ve definitely had some good laughs as well.
Ms.Grella: Mrs.Grella was always there for a good laugh, she’s one of those teachers that is just relatable and always knows how to make you laugh. She always told me that I needed to take school more seriously when I was struggling and knocked some sense into me.

Feelings were mutual. Mr. Croteau said that Gabby has a great sense of humor and is incredibly creative in the arts. Ms. Grella said, “Gabby ALWAYS makes me laugh- her personality and laugh is infectious. I loved having her in my class- especially when she would do impressions from Jimmy Fallon's "Eww" skit! I will miss her so much.” Mr. Bradd said of Abby, “ I have had the pleasure of working with Gabby since 4th grade when she started playing trumpet. Gabby grabbed my attention right away as she pretty much started off playing high notes, pushing as much air through the horn as possible, and almost always exploding with laughter after she'd run out of air! She made me laugh right from the start. As she progressed through middle school and into high school, she became a strong musician, muscling through some very tough trumpet parts, always with great effort and humor. She has a wonderful spirit of joy with everything that she does.”

Good luck with whatever you choose to do after high school, Gabby. You have a fan club here that wishes nothing but the best for you! You are going to rock it!

Signs of Suicide Program Update
Dear Parent/Guardian,

Starting Monday, March 29th students in the Freshman Class will be participating in the SOS Signs of Suicide prevention program. This program is run annually with the Freshman Class as a way for the school counselors to connect with students their first year of high school and talk about what to do if they are concerned about themselves or someone else, and identify who their supports are to help.

Our goals in participating in this program are:

  • To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
  • To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
  • To provide students training in how to identify serious depression or potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
  • To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
  • To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it

If you haven’t already, please review and complete the consent form below regarding your student’s participation. We strongly believe that all students should participate in this informational program. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the program please reach out to your student’s counselor.

Thank you,
Amanda Feeney, Student Assistance Counselor
Updated Guidance for COVID from NH DHHS
Many things are quickly changing in response to the increased research on and vaccine rate for COVID-19, including guidance for schools. This update includes explanations of how Sanborn will be incorporating the new guidance into our operations.

Quarantine Recommendations for Schools

On March 17, 2021, the NH Department of Public Health Services released new recommendations for quarantines related to schools. Emerging evidence during the pandemic, as well as NH’s experience with contact tracing in schools, shows that schools are low-risk for spreading COVID-19. A study that is being shared in the news found that in a setting where universal face masks are used in schools, COVID infection rates were the same whether keeping 3 or 6 feet of physical distancing.

NH DPHS has advised schools that in cases where students and staff are seated and spaced at least 3 feet apart, with consistent and correct face mask use, quarantine of the whole class is no longer necessary. This guidance will be used only for situations where settings are controlled and monitored to maintain correct spacing and mask use.

What this means for Sanborn is that in our classrooms where we are able to maintain the 3 feet of physical distance, and we employ correct face mask use, we will no longer be quarantining entire classrooms of students. In situations where physical distancing or masking is not controlled, such as in athletic situations for example, larger groups of students may need to continue to quarantine.

This is a positive development, as it keeps our students in school and learning, which is a goal that staff and families have had all year long.

Travel Guidance

Also this past week, we learned of new travel guidance from the NH DPHS that may be useful to families who may want to travel during our upcoming April Break.

Domestic travel within the United States outside of New England (NH, VT, ME, RI, CT, MA) no longer requires quarantine upon return to New Hampshire, although people are recommended to still follow the CDC’s travel guidance:

  • Wearing a well-fitted face mask while traveling
  • Practicing social distancing
  • Getting tested 3-5 days after travel (with a molecular or PCR-based test)
  • Limiting public interactions after travel

Travelers/visitors to AND residents of NH need to self-quarantine for 10 days after the last date of any international travel (except for essential travel to/from Canada) or travel on a cruise ship. There are some exceptions to this requirement listed in the travel guidelines; please read them for all the details.

All of these changes will be incorporated into the District Re-Entry Plan that is posted on the website within the next week. We will also continue to monitor the state websites for any additional changes that arise.

There is more optimism as we move into spring this weekend, and things are trending in a good direction for all our students, staff and families. Thank you to all of you for your continued patience and support this year, it is appreciated!

Weather this weekend looks fantastic, so get out and enjoy it!
Graduation Sign Fundraiser: Senior Class
Dear parents & guardians of the class of 2021,

Graduation  is just a few months away and what better way to celebrate than acknowledging your senior! The class is hosting a fundraiser selling yard signs. Many of you saw the signs last spring from the class of 2020 and we were excited to have the same opportunity for our graduates as well! I have attached a flier to this email for you to share with family and friends.

Please see the link and details for order below:

  • All orders and payments can be made here: https://www.highpointgifts.com/SRHS2021
  • For the signs, the senior portrait is uploaded in the "Add to Cart" step, selected from the user's computer. A high quality image is required to produce a high quality sign, in general a cell phone picture taken of a photograph of a senior will not produce a good result. High Point will double check with the purchaser to be sure that they do in fact want to use a sub-standard photograph.
  • Each sign is $25.00, tumblers are also for sale for $20.00
  • Our order window is NOW through May 14th
  • Orders will be available for pick-up at Sanborn Regional High school- with an estimated pick-up date of June 2nd*

Graduation Set for June 11
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack
At their 3/18/2021 meeting, the Sanborn Regional School Board set the graduation date for Friday, June 11. Mr. Stack presented some preliminary graduation plans that have been discussed by students and staff. Mr. Stack is scheduled to return to the board meeting with students on April 7, 2021 to present finalized graduation event plans.
Staff Members of the Month for February
Mr. Croteau's wit always brings a smile to his peers and is always looking to help out, whether with a student or a colleague. "He was able to help me get the tools I needed to set up my classroom projector as well as showing me some ways to better utilize those tools. He used his lunch period to help me and without his assistance I wouldn't have known where to go to fix this problem on my own." says one of our newest teachers. Students always want to work in his room because he fosters an environment of hard work and respect.
Will wears many hats here at Sanborn. He has recently stepped up to take on Safety and Traffic controls for our Middle/High School Daily traffic patrols at the end of each school day, something that required a 4 hour certification course.

Will has also been a leader in the Custodial areas of this school building, never steering away from responsibilities and daily situations that arise. He takes pride in his work and it shows!
Parent Alert: Two New Apps You Should Be Aware Of!
A Message From Student Assistance Counselor Amanda Feeney
We’ve learned this past year, more than ever, how valuable new technology can be. I think we would also agree that while many adults may have struggled with the various aspects of remote learning/work, it is truly impressive how these technology skills are second nature to many of our students. However, with all the positives that technology can offer us comes the reminder that the internet and all the new apps can be scary at times as well. Two new apps/websites were recently brought to the school’s attention that we feel are important to make parents aware of.

Omegle- “A great way to meet new friends. When you use Omegle, we pick someone else at random and let you talk one-on-one.”

Omegle is an app and website that has started gaining popularity among teens, especially over the past year or so. Some may remember the website “Chat Roulette” from the early 2000’s, this is a similar concept. Individuals can go to the app or website and simply click “Start a Chat” and they are connected to strangers all over the world. Although the company says it is only for those 18 or older or 13+ with parental permission there is nowhere that they ask for any information or proof of age. While the concept may sound kind of cool to some, an opportunity to talk to others all over the world, it comes with significant risks. Right on the company's website it states “Predators have been known to use Omegle, so please be careful”. A quick search of Omegle on the internet produces numerous news stories that confirm this. While some teens may solely be interested in the site to innocently meet and talk to others, many teens have reportedly been exposed to various indecent exposures, or worse, are participating in acts themselves. Police are reporting an increase in child pornography being uploaded to various sites as a result of Omegle.

OnlyFans- OnlyFans is a subscription-based content service where users pay a fee in order to follow an individual's social media content. It has gained significant traction over the pandemic with social influencers and many celebrities creating accounts for their fans to subscribe to for exclusive content. Although some influencers are using the platform to offer things such as workout videos, new music/projects and live streams with fans, the vast majority of content creators are posting NSFW (Not Safe For Work) photos, videos or even live videos that fans can pay for. Some of these content creators are earning thousands of dollars through these subscriptions. While you must be 18 to create an account or subscribe, like many websites, teens are finding various ways to get around the age requirement meaning they are accessing these images or even selling content themselves.

The Washington Post wrote a great article entitled “What Teens Wish Their Parents Knew About Social Media” that I would encourage all to read. It seems like there is a new app or platform emerging everyday, and it is almost impossible to keep up with what is currently popular with teens (it feels like everytime the adults catch on they are on to the next!) but we can try to encourage our teens to make smart, safe and educated decisions when it comes to social media.

Note Schedule Change For Learning Recovery Days: March 17 and 24
Dear Parents/Guardians,

In order to provide students with every possible opportunity for students to demonstrate learning (or competency) in all classes, we are offering 2 flexible learning recovery days with a modified class schedule on March 17 and 24, 2021. On these days, we will run a series of Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students who have been assigned by a teacher to attend. These sessions will NOT conflict with SST or NECC. Students in those programs are expected to attend those programs as usual.

Students who are not assigned to any FLT sessions by a teacher will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 12:00PM. Students not assigned to FLT for a class should continue their learning independently, with assignments that are in the Google Classroom for that particular class.

Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) at least one day prior to their scheduled intervention for any and all of the extended FLT sessions on a flexible day. Students who are not required to attend any FLT sessions do not need to come to school and will not have the absence count against them that day. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s grades, please contact your child’s teacher(s) by email (preferable) or by phone at (603) 642-3341.

The schedule for this day will be as follows:
