Community Icon, North Brookfield Savings Bank,
Named Among the Top Extraordinary Banks in the Nation
|
|
North Brookfield, MA, April 21, 2022 – North Brookfield Savings Bank, a local Central Massachusetts icon, was just named among the top extraordinary banks in the United States by The Institute for Extraordinary Banking™. This award comes on the heels of the Community Choice Central MA Best Bank Award they received for 2021.
North Brookfield Savings Bank was recognized with the Institute’s Banky™ Award for its commitment to strong community banking. This recognition is given to top community banks across the country to help people find the best banks in their communities.
“The team and I are humbled to be included in this group of iconic community banks. We continue to delight our customers with top notch, personal and customizable service so they have a partner to coach them through their financial journey.” said Marco Bernasconi, Jr., CEO/President of North Brookfield Savings Bank.
The Extraordinary Banking™ Awards highlight the vital yet often overlooked role that local community banks play in our nation’s economy. Without a vibrant local banking industry, our small businesses and families often lack the have-your-back support of a true community bank that makes communities really thrive.
The Extraordinary Banking™ Awards recognize the best of what community banks offer to our cities, towns, and nation: a true commitment to the success of the small businesses and local community they serve.
Roxanne Emmerich, Chair and Founder of The Institute for Extraordinary Banking™, proclaimed during the awards ceremony: “Community banks are the backbone of America. They are what keeps a community thriving. When a community bank leaves a community, small businesses often struggle to stay, and jobs leave. Every robust community has a strong community bank that understands how to help that community thrive and grow.”

Cornerstone Bank pledges $34,500 for sponsorship of Worcester State University’s
Bridge to Excellence: Summer STEM Retention Program
WORCESTER Mass. – Cornerstone Bank, a community bank with 12 locations throughout Central Massachusetts, is proud to announce its renewed sponsorship of the Worcester State University Bridge to Excellence: Summer STEM Retention Program. The Bank is providing $11,500 per year over the next three years for a total of $34,500 by 2024 to help the program’s incoming science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors. The goals of the program are to strengthen the school’s retention in these important fields and help more students complete their degree. This is the second three-year sponsorship pledge Cornerstone Bank has made in support of this program.
“We had the opportunity back in 2018 to sponsor the pilot program, which was a great success,” said Cornerstone Bank President and WSU Alumni Association and Foundation Board Member Randy Webber. “We are happy to extend our commitment to give students some much-needed support toward obtaining their degrees in vital STEM fields. The transition to the first year of college is a big one, and the extra support students receive through this program helps ensure they can be successful.”
The First-Year Summer STEM Bridge Program will expand in size and scope during this second phase of the pilot. "Worcester State University is thrilled to continue this important partnership with Cornerstone Bank to build on the success of the Bridge to Excellence: Summer STEM Retention Program,” said Vice President of University Advancement Thomas McNamara. “We know that our students will benefit from a strong STEM education as many of them become leaders in our shared central Massachusetts community. Under the leadership of WSU Alumnus Randy Webber, Cornerstone Bank is helping to advance academic excellence and ensure a bright economic future in our region."
This program is a unique opportunity to participate in a three-credit research course experience utilizing the Tiny Earth Initiative which is a partnership of 150 universities and schools globally, in essence to crowdsource antibiotic discovery. The curriculum centers on introducing students in introductory biology courses to a discovery-based laboratory series in which students will perform hands-on field work. While based in a biological system, this work is truly interdisciplinary and incorporates concepts and skills from all STEM disciplines.
“During our initial sponsorship, our contribution helped Worcester State support 60 students,” continued Webber. “We are excited to see this program grow, helping more students pursue their passions in fields that are increasingly in demand.”

Second Chance Overjoyed as All 88 Cats from Last Fall’s Local Large-Scale Rescue
Find Homes
Nonprofit Took in Cats Last October After the Best of Intentions Got Out of Hand
EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (May 12, 2022) – Second Chance Animal Services is excited to announce that the very last of the 88 cats from last fall’s large-scale rescue has found a home. The cats came from the home of a local animal lover who reached out to Second Chance for help last October when he had to leave his home and needed to make arrangements for cats he had taken in through the years. While some quickly found homes, others needed nurturing and medical care before they could find their forever homes.
Second Chance founder and CEO Sheryl Blancato said, “we are thrilled that this special group of cats have moved on to the next chapter of their lives. The cats included five litters that were born in our care in addition to cats of all ages who were very scared and some who needed extensive medical care before they were ready for adoption. The pregnant mamas were cared for by some of our amazing fosters while our veterinary team concentrated on the cats who needed care for upper respiratory, eye and dental issues and performed many spays and neuters. Our Almost Home staff and Adoption Center staff and volunteers helped so many of these cats to come out of their shells – it was amazing to see their progress. We knew some of the cats were quite bonded and would do better if they went home with a friend, so these pets were adopted out together.” While all the cats have left the shelter, Blancato notes that eight cats that are home with their new families are awaiting dental procedures before they can be officially adopted.
Danielle Bowes, a Second Chance’s Almost Home quarantine staff member, said that she is so happy to see the last few cats find homes. Bowes was part of the team that cared for the cats before they were ready for adoption and got to know many of the cats quite well. She pointed out that the last to be adopted were “some of the shyest in the bunch. Junior really came out of his shell over time and learned to love head scratches. Eddie & Ralph, who have advanced kidney disease, were adopted by great people who could see past the boy’s age and health issues to give them a home together for the rest of their lives.”
Amelia, the last cat to be adopted, is brave and sassy despite weighing only 7 pounds with very few teeth according to Bowes. “She is still not ready for a lot of physical human contact but luckily went to a home with other cats to help her learn. She loved every cat she was ever around, so I know she'll thrive having a couple of buddies. It's such a relief to know that so many of these cats could find a happy ending!”
Second Chance Animal Relocation Director Wendy Hall says she is proud of the Almost Home team of three who worked so incredibly hard for these cats. "Cheyanne, Jessica and Danielle brought their years of sheltering experience and compassion to make a difference in the lives of these cats."
Second Chance is grateful to everyone who supported the rescue and to all the adopters who welcomed these cats into their homes. Due to the longer than usual stay for many in the group and their extensive medical needs, the cost of their care far exceeded original estimates and quickly depleted all funds raised for their care. Those wishing to help defray the cost and support local adoption services at Second Chance can donate online at secondchanceanimals.org/donate or checks can be mailed to Second Chance, 111 Young Road, East Brookfield, MA 01550.
