Waivers Needed to Keep Kids Fed in Fall
Sign-on  by Friday July 24th

Last March, when coronavirus forced schools to shut down or move online, thousands of California schools and community-based organizations stepped up to serve the nutritional needs of students by setting up free grab-and-go meal sites. Now, as we head into the fall, they may lose their ability to provide universally free meals to all children in their communities, unless the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approves several critical child nutrition waivers.

Thanks to advocacy from schools and community partners, USDA recently extended several child nutrition waivers through next school year. Unfortunately, several others were denied, including waivers that would enable schools and afterschool programs to provide free meals and snacks at a level that meets the community's needs through next school year.

Please consider joining CFPA, state agencies and organizations across the U.S. in demanding that USDA grant these critical waivers.

Food for Students. Funds for Schools.
New CEP resources!

The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a powerful strategy to nourish children and strengthen school meal programs during the ongoing COVID crisis.
School districts only have until August 31, 2020 to apply for CEP in 2020-21.

On July 9, CFPA and our friends at the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) co-hosted a webinar featuring an overview of CEP from the California Department of Education and virtual tours of two new tools that you can use to optimize CEP for the 2020-21 school year.

Watch the webinar recording and you will...

  • Discover how to use Meals Count , a free, customizable, online tool that effectively, efficiently groups schools to get the most out of CEP.
  • Learn how to use CEP financial calculators to assess and maximize CEP funding.
  • Hear audience questions answered by CEP experts.

Meals Count is developed and supported by Open San Diego, CFPA, and the San Diego Hunger Coalition.   Contact the Meals Count team for help using the tool.
