to the rapidly growing number of older adults.
An age-friendly community is one that is a great place
to grow up and grow old.

Top Priority: Pedestrian Safety!
Age-Friendly Englewood is forming a Pedestrian Safety Coalition that will work diligently with the City's Traffic Advisory Committee, chaired by Councilwoman Cheryl Rosenberg, to focus attention on specific areas of Englewood that need safety improvements: signage, striping, lighting, etc.

Safe streets. A hot meal every day.
Heart medicine. School lunches. Medicare. Unemployment insurance. Social Service block grants.
People across New Jersey would be forced to live without any or all of the above if not for the federal dollars paying for the programs that help keep them healthy and secure. That's why a crucial element of making New Jersey communities age-friendly will be ensuring that NO NJ
residents are missed in the
#Census2020.

Perennials Are Taking Over!
The Fountain of Youth may still be a myth, but a longer life expectancy is now a reality.
In fact, L
ife expectancy from birth in the U.S.
has risen by more than 30 years in barely more than a century to a current 78.6 years.
But with the increased life expectancy, a question arises: How do people stay healthy as they age?
A new concept of healthy aging has emerged. In fact, some are using a new word for aging baby boomers - "perennials" - to describe people who want to live an active, blossoming life into old age.

Nominate an Unsung Hero
The Russ Berrie Award for Making A Difference is accepting nominations through February 21. The awards honor those who help others in need, solve problems and transform neighborhoods, bring hope to those who feel forgotten, stand up for the rights of others, create opportunities for young people to succeed, protect the environment, or risk their safety to rescue someone in distress. The service activity must have taken place in New Jersey.
More than $150,000 in cash awards will be given to Honorees in 2020, including up to 7 awards of $7,500; 2 awards of $25,000; and a top award of $50,000.

CALENDARS OF FEBRUARY ACTIVITIES
It's February - that means Spring is around the corner!
There's a wealth of activities right here in (or near) Englewood,
so go for a brisk walk and smell the Spring breeze somewhere in the air
!
Many activities are available
at little
or no charge.
Englewood Public Library has really ramped up its programs. Check out their calendar - there truly is something for everyone of every age.
Flat Rock Brook Nature Center's 3+ miles of trails are open dawn to dusk daily throughout the year; the Center also hosts guided walks and a number of programs that highlight environmental and seasonal changes. A walk in the snow is blissful!
Kaplen JCC on the Palisades
offers a full-service day program with Kosher lunch and very low cost transportation plus a calendar jam-packed with activities, which are FREE.
Palisades Interstate Park is huge and has numerous programs throughout the park every month. Check out their many beautiful sites and activities!
Senior Source in The Shops at Riverside (Riverside Square) offers activities free of charge weekday mornings through early afternoon.
