Worship & Education
THIS SUNDAY
On  December 29 , we will celebrate the Christmas season with one service of lessons and carols at 10:30 a.m. Coffee hour will follow the service.

The Elementary School Children's class will begin with music in the choir room at 9:10 a.m., and will continue in Room 3 of the Education Wing with a Bible lesson using the Godly Play approach.

Confirmation and Intersections Classes are on hiatus, and will resume in  January.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO WORK WITH OUR CHILDREN

The schedule for 2020 is being made and more helpers are needed to work with our children. Specifically, we need nursery care workers (for children five and younger during the Sunday School hour and during the 10:30 a.m. worship service), and story tellers and door people for the elementary children's Sunday school class (the story teller uses the Godly Play approach to tell a Bible story and the door person supports the children in their learning during the class).

If you can help with any of these opportunities to serve at Good Shepherd, please contact the church office ( [email protected] or 883-3680). Thank you!

CALL PROCESS UPDATE
Council has met with the call committee's primary candidate, Pastor Ken Albright, and has unanimously agreed to extend the call. Pastor Ken will meet with the congregation on Sunday, January 5, after each service.  Council has called a special congregational meeting to be held on Sunday, January 12, when members of our congregation can decide, via written ballot, whether or not to extend the call to Pastor Ken.

Pastor Ken has worked in ministry for 25 years in four congregations. His wife is Charlotte and they have two adult daughters who live in NC.  More detailed information about Pastor Ken has been mailed to members and friends of Good Shepherd.
NOISY OFFERING
Our next "noisy offering" will take place on  Sunday, January 5 , when the children will collect your pocket change in metal buckets (hence, the noise!) to help fund some of our youth attending the Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) Assembly in Greensboro from February 21 - 23. The youth who would like to attend are Yuri and Isa Emaus, Joe Smith, and Forrest McConnell.

Start rounding up your change! If your change jar happens to be low, bills and checks (made out to LCGS and indicating LYO Assembly) will also be gratefully accepted. Thank you!
UN-DECORATING GOOD SHEPHERD

On Wednesday, January 8, beginning at 2:30 p.m., helpers are needed to remove decorations from the church. Please come and help if you can. Many hands make light work! Thank you!
SANCTUARY FLOWERS

If you would like to help brighten the sanctuary by sponsoring flowers, please sign up on the schedule on the far right panel of the bulletin board. Many dates in 2020 are available. Each bouquet costs $30. Thank you!

GOOD SHEPHERD'S GIVING TREE
Through the end of 2019, you can s ponsor a gift for ELCA Good Gifts, which supports ELCA churchwide ministries: the ELCA Fund for Leaders, ELCA Global Church Sponsorship, ELCA New Congregations, ELCA Vision for Mission, ELCA World Hunger, Disability Ministries and Lutheran Disaster Response. Each of these programs is a long-term, partnership-based ministry that focuses on the needs identified by local congregations and global companion churches and their communities.  Stop by the tree to sponsor an ornament. Thank you!
THANK YOU!

Thank you so much to everyone who baked sweet potatoes for the annual community Christmas dinner at Sacred Heart on December 25. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
WORSHIP AT LIVING WATERS
On December 1, eight people from Good Shepherd traveled to Cherokee, NC to worship with the congregation of Living Waters Lutheran Church. Bill and Laurie Johnson, Jackie Jenkins, Ellen Dozier, Isa and Victor Emaus, Rich Handschin and Janice Leibe reflected on their time with the people of Living Waters and want to share their thoughts with all of you. This is the final part of a four-week series.

Cross wall at Living Waters. The spear was made by a member who said the color red on the spear tip made him think of Jesus' blood.
I loved learning about the food pantry ministry. The church's program is incredibly efficiently operated and obviously addresses a great need in that community.

I saw hope today, in the children who so obviously felt at home in that place and a part of their church family.

I love the way the order of worship blends indigenous and Euro-American cultures.

There is an advantage to worshipping with a small group of folks whom you have known for years. I appreciated the  easy familiarity that led to honest questioning, joking and teasing, and willingness to orally share prayer requests with one another.

Accompaniment becomes real when you are standing in a prayer circle, holding hands with Native American brothers and sisters. It becomes real when a sister sings, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" in Cherokee as we hum the accompaniment. Being there, meeting the members of Living Waters, sharing in their worship made our partnership come alive.
In Our Community
MEDICATION SAFETY
Using a lockbox for your medications might be something to consider when friends and family are visiting during the holidays. The CARE Coalition of Transylvania County is giving lockboxes away. Simply call 884-1750 to arrange to pick one up from the Community Services Building at 106 E. Morgan Street in Brevard. You can also purchase one for about $11 at Walmart.  Additionally, if you have medications that you no longer need, you can drop them off year-round at the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office at 153 Public Safety Way in Brevard.
JOIN THE JOURNEY TO MONTGOMERY
