Survey: Most NJ Businesses Have Adapted to the Realities of Pandemic, but Need Help in the Coming Months

Businesses Say They Will Need Financial and Technical Support in Months to Come

State business owners report they are adapting to the realities of COVID-19, however many say they need additional support from the state and federal governments, including financing and technical assistance, according to an online survey of more than 2,000 state businesses and non-profits.

“New Jersey businesses have responded admirably to the hardships caused by the pandemic, but I know many are still hurting,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “Through our newly passed economic recovery package, we have $50 million in additional aid for small businesses we are preparing to deploy to help those in need, and we stand ready to offer technical and logistical assistance to ensure that those needs are met as well.”

The survey, conducted by the Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University and sponsored by the New Jersey Small Business Development Center (NJSBDC), was conducted in November to examine how businesses have revised operations during the COVID-19 pandemic to conduct business, serve customers, and support employees.

Financial Payment Scams

Millions of people continue to seek financial payments as a result of the ongoing pandemic and the upcoming tax season. Threat actors take advantage of these opportunities to employ social engineering tactics through phishing, vishing, and SMiShing campaigns in attempts to convince users to divulge sensitive information. This information can be subsequently used in fraudulent activity and financial payment scams, such as unemployment benefit scams, economic impact (or stimulus) payment scams, and tax refund payment scams. We provide examples and recommendations to educate users on these continuing threats and tactics in order to reduce victimization.

Lawmakers Say NJ Businesses Should Reopen by Region

A state Senate committee has approved a bill that would force the Murphy administration to take a regional approach to restricting businesses because of the pandemic.

The bill, approved 5-0 by the Senate Commerce Committee, would require the administration devise a color-coded system to guide the state’s reopening. Business lobbyists have throughout the health crisis criticized what they describe as the Murphy administration’s “one-size-fits-all” decision-making that treats businesses in regions with major outbreaks the same as those in counties with a low risk of outbreak.
