La Mesa Chamber News -
What We've Been Up To!
We have been keeping you up to date on all things COVID-19 and the pandemic but thought in this issue we would share some additional news, as we continue to serve you.

We have been active in assisting in raising funds for the damaged businesses of May 30th and 31st and are thrilled that we have the pleasure to deliver checks from the GoFundMe account to local businesses. This is truly an honor! Due to the generosity of people from throughout the region, businesses and corporate leaders, over $240,000 has been raised so far, to assist our businesses.

We have been sharing information to you regarding grants, loans, funding sources and other revenue streams that may assist you during this pandemic. Make sure you take a look each week! In April, we created a Coronavirus survey that gave us your feedback on how the pandemic was affecting you. Who would have known, we would still see no end in sight to the effects of this deadly disease on our lives?
We Want To Share Changes You Have Made Regarding Your Business – Tell Us!
We want to be sure that we promote your business. We are using different avenues to do this, including a partnership to share your information via an expanded social media presence.

TELL US - Have you moved your dining or retail outside to serve your customers? Have you changed your business hours? What other changes can we share to promote your business? Send us an email and let us know of any changes you have made that we can share to: chamber@lamesachamber.com.
We are partnering with the Facebook group, Love La Mesa Strong, to assist wherever possible. This includes making sure the beautiful art boards on windows are stored for the future, working with them and sponsors to provide masks to local businesses and other activities that arise, allowing us to partner as we promote our city and business community.

We are here for you and are working tirelessly to be a resource for you as we all navigate this pandemic.

Plans We Have For Future Events
We know that everyone is looking forward to the day when we can gather and be at an event together – like our Business Expos or our popular Taste of San Diego East.

Being positive and planning for the future, we have held several dates for those events. We realize that the COVID-19 pandemic will dictate when and how we can produce those events. However, by setting aside dates and locations, helps us look toward the future and perpetuate the hope that we can see all of you soon. Oh, how we miss you! We took for granted the room(s) full of laughter and chatter, so noisy that no one could hear the announcements on the microphone! The lines out the door of people waiting to enter our event, the truckloads of food vendors arriving to set up, the business vendors arriving and bringing all of their wares and those great door prizes, the announcers who were perplexed that no one could hear them, the photographers and videographers that were running around to capture the evening and the tons of volunteers helping throughout the night. Those were the days my friend! We would give anything, to have those days back again!
Our Business Expo
We are making plans to hold a Business Expo at the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego El Cajon. The entire courtyard is outside and as soon as we clearly know how to produce this event during the pandemic, we shall. We held a date in August. Based on our recent COVID-19 statistics, we will move the “held” date to September.
This annual popular food frenzy is being held at the Town & Country Hotel. We have set aside the date of Monday, October 5th. Obviously, the COVID-19 statistics and the health orders/regulations will dictate if this event can happen in October. Stay tuned!
Mixers and Ribbon Cuttings
The monthly evening mixers are on “hold” at this time. We will be doing small ribbon cuttings for those new members that wish to have one. They will be with owners and/or management team and Chamber staff. These will not an “invitation type” event for members as in the past, due to COVID-19.
The pandemic offers us a great challenge, but also a chance to be creative and flexible. We will continue to make plans for events and activities as we navigate this pandemic because,

We Can’t Wait to See Again!
IMPORTANT CITY OF LA MESA NEWS!
THE CITY ALLOWS FOR TEMPORARY USE OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE OUTDOOR AREAS FOR RETAIL, SERVICE & OTHER DISPLAY
The City of La Mesa has issued Executive Order 4-2020 on July 16th, which temporarily allows the use of public and private outdoor areas by retail, service, or other commercial establishments for display of products or provision of services, provided those establishments obtain written authorization from the Director of Community Development and comply with all social distancing and other COVID-19 related health orders and all other City, County (e.g., emergency orders), State and Federal laws(e.g. Americans with Disabilities Act). This Executive order is issued to provide opportunities for retail and service businesses in light of the restrictions placed upon them by the State and San Diego County Public Health Orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHAT THIS MEANS AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Businesses may consider using public and private space to offer retail, service, and other commercial establishments may utilize outdoor spaces, including but not limited to adjacent walkways and sidewalks and sidewalks and onsite parking areas, for display of products or provision of services in accordance with these Regulations and approval of a Temporary Outdoor Display or Service Authorization Application by the Community Director, or his or her designee. All COVID-19 rules to protect the spread must be considered, as you create the diagram of your outdoor space - such as the social distancing regulations. The ADA requirements must be followed to allow service to those with the Americans with Disabilities Act and strongly consider how your customers will have access (enter and leave) to your new temporary outdoor space.

Applications available at: http://cityoflamesa.us/750/Community-Development. For more information please contact akinnard@cityoflamesa.us in the Community Development department.
Up Close & Personal with Star Lux Studio!
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
Star Lux Studio has been open for almost 3 years at The Business Center of La Mesa building. I operate a recording studio and give music lessons.

WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS SPECIAL OR UNIQUE?
The diversity of my experience. I’ve worked in many styles of music including Classical, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock, Heavy Metal, Country, Reggae and more!

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED? WHY?
Be honest with yourself and your abilities. Don’t be afraid of a challenge or making mistakes. You only fail if you quit.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN YOUR BUSINESS AND WORK IN YOUR CURRENT INDUSTRY?
I had great teachers like Fred Benedetti and Celino Romero. They changed my life in such a positive way, so I wanted to do that for others too. Because of that, I got the chance to start teaching at Alan’s Music Center in 2005, and I never looked back.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?
I started going to Grossmont College at age 16 to study Classical Guitar and Audio Recording.
Contact Star Lux Studio today for lessons, recording projects, and more!
SDCCU Stuff the Bus is Collecting Monetary Donations for New, Unused School Supplies for Students in Need
School supply drive held in partnership with the YMCA of Orange County which supports kids in both Orange and Riverside Counties
Kids face many hardships—school supplies should not be one of them. That’s why San Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®) has partnered with the YMCA of Orange County to collect school supplies for Orange County and Riverside County students in need and this year, many more parents and students are facing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, so the need is even greater!
This year, with the closure of many non-essential businesses due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, many more families are facing financial hardship and there is even a greater need for support. Having a backpack and all of the needed school supplies is essential for success in the school year. A small donation can make a big difference in the life of students in need.
“We encourage the entire SDCCU community to support this effort and donate to help set these children up for success in the new school year. We are proud to once again partner with the YMCA of Orange County to help make a big difference in the lives of students in need throughout the Southern California,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU President and CEO.
Monetary donations will be accepted online through July 31. For more information or to donate online, visit sdccu.com/donate.
