'Patriot Day' Is This Saturday
Tomorrow (September 11, 2021) is the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks that killed 2,977 people and injured more than 25,000. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in human history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States with more than 400 police officers and firefighters killed on that day. The day is now known annually as Patriot Day. Commemorations are planned in New York City, Virginia and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Check local media listings for a chance to view ceremonies taking place throughout the morning and day paying tribute to those who lost their lives that day, and their families.

A few weeks after the terrorist attacks, the Global War on Terrorism began when U.S. and British forces initiated aerial bombing campaigns in Afghanistan targeting Taliban and al-Qaeda camps. While there are many in our area who participated in military operations during that time, Heritage Park located at the corner of Lohmans Crossing Road and Hurst Creek Road currently honors 24 past and present Lakeway residents who served during that war. CLICK HERE to learn more about Heritage Park and how to be included (or a family member) as part of that memorial.

While tomorrow is a day of remembrance, Patriot Day is also a chance to help others in tribute to those killed and injured on September 11, 2001. CLICK HERE to learn about some volunteer opportunities.
