This Wednesday, March 4 is one of three upcoming Wednesdays where we will not be releasing the students early due to testing. This applies to all campuses across OCPS, not just Colonial. For planning purposes, the other two Wednesdays are April 1 and May 6.

Below you will find flyers on an exciting special event scheduled for this coming Tuesday, March 3 - FSA Literacy Night. This is an informational session for Colonial parents on the upcoming Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) and End of Course (EOC) exams. These annual tests are required by the Florida Department of Education and are very important assessments in terms of our students' academic records. If you have a student at Colonial, please take a little time from your Tuesday evening to participate. I promise you that it will be well worth your attendance.

As always, thank you for your continued support and for looking over this latest issue. Have a great week!

It's Great To Be A Grenadier!

Dr. Maestre
Principal

Colonial High School recognizes the value of our staff, students, and community members as an extra set of eyes and ears and asks for your help in identifying possible safety or security concerns. If you see something or hear of something suspicious, please say something. Be aware. Be responsible. Thank you!

Reminders

Parent Survey
We are still striving for a 20% participation rate on our annual parent survey. Please remember that the responses are completely anonymous, but that we depend on this feedback for school improvement. If this applies to your household and you still have not taken the 2020 survey, would you do so? Your help is greatly appreciated.  When parents complete the survey, students can earn HERO points!  Simply take a picture of the completion page and show it to an administrator.

Events:
FSA Literacy Night: March 3, on Freshman Campus from 6:00-7:30 pm.  All parents and students are invited to attend!

Juniors: Get ready for our school day SAT on March 4th.

Mark your calendars now - in order for all students to complete their SAT or FSA tests without concern for running out of time, all OCPS students will be scheduled for a full school day instead of the normal early dismissal on three Wednesdays: March 4, April 1, and May 6, 2020.

Progress Monitoring Assessments (PMAs) for the 3rd Quarter are almost here.  This means that every day of instruction is valuable and cannot be missed.  Some students are experiencing pull-out instruction, which is a small group led by a certified teacher to provide focus on a specific skill or standard.  These experiences are designed to support student needs and are based on the previous PMA results.  Students should attend pull-out opportunities when invited to do so.

Spring Break Boot Camp is right around the corner... Ask your English or Biology teacher for more details...

Student Spotlight

Oscar Murquia
Oscar Murguia placed 3rd in the English-Speaking Union Shakespeare Competition!  He competed with students from Orange, Seminole, and Osceola counties in both public and private schools.  Congratulations, Oscar!

Junior Germain
Junior Germain was nominated to receive a bike from Hands On Orlando by guidance counselor, Ms. Contreras.  Ms. Contreras has this to say about Junior: I nominated him because Junior is incredibly hardworking and kind to students and staff alike.  Last summer, Junior walked over 3 miles each day to attend summer school.  Junior is a hard worker with a positive, friendly spirit!  Now he has his own transportation to make it to that summer job!

Classroom Spotlight
Service Learning by our Latinos in Action students
Students in our Latinos In Action course tutor students at nearby elementary schools two times a week.  Pictured below, Ms. Melo's students Drian and Ezekiel read a picture book with a student at Dover Shores Elementary.  Service Learning is one of the tenets of the LIA program, which is designed to combine student leadership and learning.

Teacher Spotlight

Our teachers have been recognizing each other with the Grenadier Mickey. This week, Ms. Tammi Jones (English 12 teacher) and Ms. Gray (Agricultural Science teacher) were nominated to spend the week with Grenadier Mickey!

Ms. Tammi Jones, pictured below left, is nominated for providing a constant voice of reason and for always holding students to high standards. She also organizes senior activities like Grad Bash and Graduation. She sacrifices so much of herself to make senior programs and activities functional whilst providing a world class education to students in their classrooms. She is a true role model to emulate in our own practice!

Ms. Gray, pictured above right, does phenomenal work with our Agricultural Science students. She builds great relationships with her students and connects with them daily. She spends time organizing events for our FFA students and promoting the experience to our Freshman so that they may also enjoy experiences here at Colonial! She dedicates a lot of her time making sure the experiences students receive are something they'll never forget. From hands on outdoor activities to organic food tasting labs, the students are learning something fun, creative, and memorable for their time at high school.

Club/Organization Spotlight

Our Colonial High School Improv Troupe hosted a Lip Sync Battle last Friday!  One surprise guest participant really brought the house down... Dr. Maestre was one of several staff members who provided quality entertainment last Friday night!
