INTRODUCING THE LEADERSHPE VIEW
We're launching the all-new monthly column from CEO Chris Wilkie and other members of the SHPE executive team, called The LeaderSHPE View. For members and stakeholders, this monthly column covers the state of SHPE, current events, organizational vision, and even some personal thoughts and philosophies. Please share your feedback with ceo@shpe.org.
The SHPE Technical Achievement and Recognition (STAR) Awards honor outstanding professionals for their dedication, commitment, and selfless efforts to advance Hispanics in STEM careers. Nominations are due July 15 and this is your chance to get all of your questions answered before your hit "submit" on that nomination form. Join us on Zoom on Tuesday, June 21, at 10am PT/1pm ET.
JAY FLORES COMPETES IN NBC'S AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR
Congrats to SHPE member Jay Flores who competed last night on NBC's popular American Ninja Warrior. As covered in his alumni publication The University of Wisconsin–Madison News, "After 10 years of rejected applications and failed walk-on attempts in multiple cities, he finally got the call to compete on the show — and an opportunity to share his message about STEM and perseverance on television’s big stage." We're rooting for you, Jay!
We’re excited to share that SHPE has once again earned a Platinum Seal of Transparency with Candid (formerly Guidestar)! We earned the seal by sharing a significant amount of detail about the financials and operations of the organization. And this seal reassures our donors and partners that they can support our work with trust and confidence.
As a reminder, in honor of Pride Month, SHPE is holding special programs, featuring inspiring LGBTQ+ stories, and empowering our members to be their authentic selves. #WeAreSHPE
Keep an eye out for additional events, but here's a short list of ways to celebrate:
We had a total of 112 responses last week for Pride Month! 24% said they would celebrate by listening and learning to increase their LGBTQ+ understanding. With a three way tie for second place, 17% said they would uplift LGBTQ+ voices on social media; 17% said they would attend a party or parade; and 17% said they would actively assess how to be a good ally. 12% will share their own story with friends and family. And 12% will celebrate Pride in some other kind of way! #themoreyouknow
