President's Message

Hello Friends!
I'm happy to represent the
Rocklin Friends of the Library as President again this year. Thank you for your continued support of our Rocklin Library. Here is what we have planned for the year so far.
We just completed our 4th annual
"Love your Library" event on February 13th and 14th. Our members gave away 125 book bags filled with chocolate, bookmarks, and a free book from our bookstore! This event remains popular in our community with many residents participating annually.
On March 8th we will partner with the Rocklin Historical Society at Old
 St. Mary's Church to host authors Steve and Susie Swatt for a discussion and presentation on
Women in California Politics. 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, making this Women's History Month the perfect time to talk about the influence women have made in shaping California.

Story Time at the Station
, in partnership with the Rocklin Police Department, is going on its fourth year with continued community interest and participation. Friends member Rita Peterson and her husband Roger coordinate these events on behalf of the Friends, while librarian Tony Carmack chooses the books for the events. Our Police Department employees and volunteers are to be commended for their enthusiastic reading and tours of the Rocklin Police Station. Spring Story Time at the Station will take place on April 6.
 The Friends of the Library's
Baby's First Book initiative is entering its second year. We are pleased to report that 79 families visited the library last year and picked up a free board book for their baby. The new board books are available at the downstairs information desk for parents of children aged 0-12 months. Parents can simply ask the library staff for their child's free book and choose among ten titles. These interactions have fostered conversations between patrons and staff about all of the great programs offered at our library.
The RFOL
Birthday Club currently has over 400 children enrolled! Children aged 2-10 can come to the library to pick up a free book and certificate for a "Baby Bite Cupcake" from our partners at
Icing on the Cupcake in Rocklin. Sign-ups are available online at

The Friends will be hosting a series of
Rocklin Community Forums this year. On February 27th Officer Kato of the Roseville Police Department spoke on "
Human Trafficking in Placer County." This free, informal event took place in the Rocklin Library's community room.
The Friends of the Library take our mission seriously:
to promote and support the Rocklin Library and the Placer County library system, and to encourage community interest in libraries, reading, and lifelong learning. Not one of these things I have highlighted would be possible without your contributions and membership.

Friends of the Library Hold Forum on Human Trafficking

The Friends hosted their first
"Rocklin Community Forum" of the year on February 27.
Human Trafficking in Placer County was the topic of discussion and it packed our library community room with residents from Rocklin and surrounding communities.
Sgt. Darrin Kato of the Roseville Police Department was our speaker for the evening. His presentation included types of human trafficking; different types of pimping and pandering; insight into how trafficking takes place in Placer County; what our police agencies are doing to combat it; and dispelling myths about trafficking in our area.
One of the myths Sgt. Kato discussed was that the Galleria Mall is a hotbed for trafficking. He said that there has never been an issue with a kidnapping at the mall, and there are police operations conducted there regularly with no incidents to date. He gave parents advice on monitoring changes in their children's behavior and their use of social media as possible indicators that they are being groomed by a trafficker. Sgt. Kato said most children are contacted through social media apps by traffickers who troll for hours on end looking for their next target.

Rocklin Library Has a Passion for Trains

In 1873, fewer than 25 years since California became a state, French author Jules Verne had published his literary masterpiece,
Around the World in Eighty Days. In chapter 26, we learn that protagonist Phileas Fogg has left San Francisco to points east on the Pacific Railroad. He writes,

Around the World in Eighty Days
inspired multiple adaptations: David Niven's film version (1956), Jackie Chan's (2004), a television series with Pierce Brosnan (1989), amusement park rides, video and board games, among others. It was a story prompted by the golden age of travel, made possible by the completion of the
First Continental Railroad
(1869), which included our fair town, Roclin/Rocklin on the route!
Visitors to the Rocklin Library cannot miss the passion for trains. Before you even enter the building, you'll see to your left,
"Unplug" by artist Ritu Atwal, an outdoor sculpture as part of the
"Off the Rails" public art project. Walk through the entrance and you'll find a diorama depicting Rocklin's historic roundhouse train turntable, watched over by the silent
"On Time" station master statue. Above the service desk, you'll notice train tracks, and around the first floor you'll encounter several model trains on the top shelves. Find your way to the children's section and discover "the train table," a destination for many of Rocklin's youngest citizens who happily combine Thomas the Train railway set toys with plastic dinosaurs. You have probably noticed that even the corners of the library resemble passenger train car interiors.
And most importantly are the many books on trains on the shelves of the library, where the spirit of transportation has no end or beginning for the reader. This train is bound for imagination!

FOL Library Bookstore Continues to Thrive!
The Rocklin Friends of the Library's used bookstore is thriving! Thanks to the generosity of book lovers throughout the community, we keep the store stocked with gently used books, movies, music and even comic books.
Adult readers can find books in a variety of genres - ranging from fiction, romance, mystery, inspiration, biographies and history to nature/science, health, cookbooks, travel and business. For those who are looking for "good reads," check out the book club suggestion shelf. We also offer a small selection of DVDs and CDs.
Be on the lookout for occasional "flash" sales of popular titles or authors. Hardbacks are $3; paperbacks are $2.
When
Ken's Comics in Rocklin closed its doors late last year, they donated thousands of their unique
comic books to the Friends. We're selling them for 25 cents each or 5 for $1 while supplies last.
The
children's section is also well-stocked with books for our younger readers - from board books for toddlers to chapter books for beginning readers and selections for our teen readers. Prices vary; watch for special sales throughout the month.
The bookstore is located on the right as you walk in the front entrance of the library. Payment is an honor system; leave cash or checks in the slot inside the store.
We raised more than $12,000 in 2019 through sales in our bookstore and on eBay. Proceeds are used by the Placer County library staff to purchase adult and children's books as well as special materials for the library collection.
Generous donations help us keep the shelves stocked with fresh inventory. Books can be dropped in the large slot on the wall inside the library front entrance. For large donations, please email us. While we're thankful for all donations, we cannot accept textbooks, computer manuals, or encyclopedias. Magazines can be taken to the Loomis Library and Community Event Center off Horseshoe Bar Road (behind the Veterans' Hall).

Summer STEM Camp Sign-ups Coming Soon

The Rocklin Friends of the Library realize how important it is to keep kids engaged in learning over the summer. We are in our third year of providing a
STEM camp to teach new skills that we hope will inspire a passion that students can build upon in the future.
We are partnering with
IntelliBricks
to provide a
JavaScript Coding and Electronics 101 class
for ages 9-14 years old. This class will teach how to build simple circuits and code them to accomplish tasks. The class will introduce the basics of JavaScript and electronic components from resistors, LEDs to servo motors and sensors. No coding experience needed. All materials for the class will be provided. 
The camp will be held at the
Community Room at the Rocklin Library located at 4890 Granite Drive in Rocklin. The dates for the camp are
June 22-26 from 1:00 pm. to 4:00 p.m. The class will be limited to 15 students at no cost. Be sure your child can attend the full week before registering. Although, there is no cost to the student the Friends are fully funding these classes.

Rocklin Friends of the Library Has a New Art Coordinator

Linda Hoschler is the new Art Coordinator for the Rocklin Friends of the Library. She is an abstract glass artist who has been creating unique glass art for more than 18 years. She is also the President of the Rocklin Fine Arts Committee. We welcome her to the Friends!
Currently Linda's team is showing art by Loomis artist Deborah Crosby. The work on display at the Rocklin Library is part of a larger body of Deborah's work entitled "Curiosities." These works are digital collages on top of vintage dictionary pages, and each piece is titled from a word on the original dictionary page. Deborah challenges you to look at each work carefully and create a narrative about it. Please stop by, check these out, and form your own story about each work!
