Progress
We live in a politically aware town, and as a result, the news is never boring around here. However, the pace of news — be it from the Supreme Court, primary elections, overseas wars or other global activities — has left my head spinning. But here in our very important corner of the universe, the news is good.

Funding and Award Opportunities
|
|
Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award
The Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award provides funding for extraordinary early career researchers who have an innovative, new idea but lack sufficient preliminary data to obtain traditional funding. The research supported by the award must be novel, exceptionally creative and, if successful, have the strong potential for high impact in the cancer field. Eligible applicants (including non-U.S. citizens) must be conducting independent research at a U.S. institution. Basic and translational/clinical projects will be considered, and individuals with a background in multiple disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. (Applications will be accepted from all scientific disciplines — e.g., chemistry, computer sciences, mathematics, engineering, physics — provided that the proposed research meets the selection criteria.) The Stage 1 award will be for two years, $200,000 per year ($400,000 total), with the Stage 2 award for up to two additional years of funding (up to four years total for $800,000). The Stage 2 award will be granted to those awardees who demonstrate significant progress on their proposed research during years one and two. View a complete award program description and application guidelines. Submit an application through proposalCENTRAL by July 6 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Small Business Transition Grant
The Small Business Transition Grant supports university researchers who would like to transition their career path from academia to a small business setting. This funding opportunity provides $400,000 as a Phase I STTR award and up to $2 million after transitioning to a Phase II SBIR. Proposed projects must fit into at least one of the following categories:
- Therapeutics and Preventative Agents
- Imaging Technologies, Interventional Devices, and In Vivo Diagnostics
- In Vitro and Ex Vivo Diagnostics and Prognostics
- Cancer Prevention and Control, Supportive Care, and Survivorship
To help facilitate the transition from junior academic scientist to entrepreneur, the selected grantees are required to secure mentoring. Therefore, the mentoring team that supports the candidate will be a critical factor in peer review. View more information and an application portal. Application due: Monday, August 22 at 5:00 p.m. ET.
