Remembering 9/11: Twenty Years Later
A Word from Chris Pielli: This September 11th marked the 20th anniversary of one of the darkest days in our Country’s history. At St. Isaac Jogues’ Parish in Tredyffrin, local police, firefighters, emergency personnel, dignitaries and citizens remembered and honored those first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is my fervent hope that we take time on every September 11th to be kind to each other and remember those brave first responders and fellow Americans who lost their lives to vicious terrorist attacks that fateful day.
My Father and Uncle are retired FDNY firefighters. They will be the first to tell you that the FDNY – New York City’s Bravest – always have in their mind that, if there are people in a burning building, you better be in there to get them. That is what happened to the brave 343 New York City Firefighters who lost their lives but saved so many on that tragic day. It is a known fact that many of these firefighters knew as they were entering the Towers that they would not be returning. I can assure you none of them asked before entering if the people stuck in the Towers were Republicans or Democrats, White or African American, Muslim or Christian, Gay or Straight. The Bravest went into the inferno to save Americans. Let us honor these men and women by always remembering their sacrifice and keeping in mind that what binds us together as fellow Americans is much stronger than any divisions the wicked will sow.

Equipping Staff with Effective Emergency Response Tools
On Wednesday, September 29th, and Thursday, September 30th, our office partnered with the Department of Emergency Services (DES) to continue with ongoing emergency preparedness training for our staff. These two sessions followed the initial "Emergency Response Planning Workshop" roundtable discussion referenced back in our July issue. This time, we incorporated our whole staff and focused specifically on the concept of the A.L.I.C.E. response, presented by West Goshen Chief of Police Michael P. Carroll. A.L.I.C.E. is a protocol used in an Active Shooter Crisis situation ("Alert," "Lockdown," "Inform," "Counter" and "Evacuate." These five types of actions are not an ordered sequence like "stop, drop and roll," but rather options to choose from in order to best protect one's life. Someone who suddenly finds themselves in a mass attack or threat scenario should very quickly make their best determination of what is occurring and which of the options will provide the greatest degree of security for them. More instruction and helpful resources can be found at www.ready.gov. A special thanks to Chief Carroll and our DES Department for all of their support and assistance.

County-Wide Hurricane Ida Recovery Efforts
Chester County officials and the Department of Emergency Services (DES) operated a Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) for all individuals and families in Chester County affected by Hurricane Ida on September 8th and 9th at the United Sports Training Center in Downingtown . The MARC acted as a “one stop shop” to provide assistance to all impacted residents by bringing together staff from many agencies who helped with the services needed to address the losses caused by the storm. However, with the recent confirmation of federal funding assistance, Chester County Emergency Officials have worked with FEMA to establish an ongoing PA Emergency Management Agency Disaster Recovery Center within the county, located at the Ashbridge Square Shopping Center, 945 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown.
For all information and updates on Chester County’s support for Hurricane Ida, including resources for residents, small businesses, dwelling damage, donation sites and loss of important documents, visit chesco.org/Ida.

The Recorder of Deeds office would like to bid a fond farewell to its own Kayla Murphy, Recording Technician III, who has decided to move on from the County of Chester after nearly 9 years of service. We thank Kayla for her hard work over the years and wish her the best on her next endeavor. She will be sorely missed!

Can I pay for transfer taxes indicated on the Statement of Value that accompanies my document with a credit card like I can do with the document recording fees?
Bubbles says, “Ruh-roh! No can do." The PA Department of Revenue in Harrisburg requires any and all transfer taxes be paid by check. We do accept cash, credit card and money orders for document recording fees, like for deeds, but customers should generate a business check payable to the Chester County Recorder of Deeds for tax-related fees such as Statements of Value. Personal and estate checks are not accepted. Please refer to our Fee Schedule for more information.
