John 1: 43 - 51
43 The next day Jesus wanted to go into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, Joseph’s son, from Nazareth.”
46 Nathanael responded, “Can anything from Nazareth be good?” Philip said, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here is a genuine Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48 Nathanael asked him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49 Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are God’s Son. You are the king of Israel.” 50 Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these! 51 I assure you that you will see heaven open and God’s angels going up to heaven and down to earth on the Human One.”

In our scripture today we read that Philip met Jesus and was so excited about meeting Him, he ran to his friend Nathanael to tell him! When Philip told Nathanael that he had met Jesus, from Nazareth and that He was the One who had had come to save them, Nathanael responded with, "but does anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip told Nathanael, "come and see!"
"Don't judge a book by it's cover!"
Have you ever heard of this saying? Do you know what it means?
Sometimes we decide, by the way a book cover looks, whether or not we want to read it. Just think all of the imaginary adventures you have missed out on by not reading a book because the cover looked "boring!"
Sometimes we do this with people as well! Just like Nathanael judged Jesus for where he was from, we look at people and judge them for what they are wearing, where they are from, how they talk and by the color of their skin. We make up our own story, without really knowing anything about them, all based on their outer cover.
God tells us through Philip, "come and see!"
The Bible teaches us we are all wonderfully made by God! This does not mean we are all the same! We know that God gives us different gifts and strengths and that we all have a different story, different likes and interests and different looks! The next time you meet someone that looks a little different from you, don't judge, go and see and listen and learn! You may learn something new and even make a new friend!
Prayer
Dear God, Help me to open my eyes, ears and heart to all of those who are different from me! Amen.
Activity
Just like all of us, every single snowflake that falls from the sky is different! Their differences don’t make any of them less beautiful than their other snowflake friends! Create a snowflake as a reminder that YOU are different AND wonderfully made!
Visit the church campus this week and search for the hidden snowflakes! How many can you find? Let us know and the person that comes the closest to the correct number hidden will receive a special prize! Email Jessica your number by Saturday, January 23!
