Learn Flamenco Dance!
Flamenco is from Andalucia in southern Spain. It is a profound, mysterious, powerful and passionate art form, expressing all of life, and emerged from a mixture of eastern and western cultures over many centuries, including influence from the Arabs and Moors, the Gypsies from India, the Jews... and coming from the heart and spirit of each individual, expressing their joys, their sadness, a great range of emotions... and touching the heart and soul of each other and the audience. We will be learning beautiful dance movements, involving a lot of arm and hand movements, proud posture, lots of fun rhythmical foot stomping, percussion of different kinds of hand clapping to flamenco rhythms, shouts of encouragement as flamenco artists do, a fun singing number with clapping and choreography, and another more involved choreography.
The instructor for this class is internationally known Flamenco dancer and teacher, Ana Montes (www.anamontes.com). One or more parents of students participating in the class will also be present to help with attendance.
This is a PTA-sponsored program and is taught in Spanish.
Dates, Location and Cost:
April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, and Sat., May 21
Mondays, 3:35-4:45pm in the Puesta del Sol Gymnasium.
*Class ends promptly at 4:45pm.
$140 for 7 classes.

Searching for Host Families
Puesta del Sol is looking for host families for our 2022-2023 Amity interns. Host families play a vital role in the success of the program. By welcoming an intern from another country into their home, volunteer host families gain friendship, understanding, knowledge and a connection to the world. Host families will experience new tastes and customs and have the chance to practice their intern's language. Your children will learn about different parts of the world from the intern and may receive extra help with their own language studies.
At Puesta del Sol, our host families typically host for 13 weeks but offer longer durations. You may select to host for Fall, Winter or Spring or half-year, and we will extend full-year if necessary. The Amity Committee needs 20 host family applications for 6 interns to ensure improved matching and experience for our interns and families. You may make a preference for male or female and/or time of year. We are in need of families interested in hosting male interns.
To apply to be a host family, please fill out an application.

Spanish Immersion / Dual Language / ISA Update
|
The Puesta del Sol PTA board and the Bellevue PTSA Council jointly called for a Spanish Language Program Advisory Committee (SLPAC), and the district has accepted the proposal in concept. The details of how this will be rolled out are still to be determined.
Part of the Position Statement is below or read the full PTSA Council statement here.
“In support of the goal of engaging families and school staff in equal partnership in decisions that affect children and families, we join with the Puesta del Sol PTA Board in calling for the creation of a Spanish Language Program Advisory Committee to include proportional representation from all stakeholders including but not limited to secondary students, parents, teachers and administrators from at least each of the following:
• Elementary ISA Language Program (Puesta del Sol)
• Middle School ISA Language Program (Tillicum)
• High School ISA Language Program (Newport, Sammamish)
• Elementary Dual Language Programs (Stevenson, Sherwood Forest, Lake Hills)
• Middle School Dual Language Programs (Highland, Tillicum)
• High School Dual Language Program (Sammamish)
• K-12 Instructional Leader and Curriculum Developer for World Languages
The purpose of the committee would be to help advise District leaders regarding proposed program changes, as well as advocating for language programs in the long term to help ensure that the Dual Language and Immersion programs continue to thrive. A committee of this makeup would convene regularly to work together to inform, influence and create policies, practices, and programs that meet both community expectations and OSPI requirements.”

Staff Art for Women's History Month
Maria Torres, Attendance Specialist for Puesta del Sol Elementary, completed a wonderful Women of History piece that is on display. Maria assembled a collection of images to craft a poster of trailblazing women who span generations, cultures and contributions. They include artists like Georgia O’Keefe and Frida Kahlo, Civil Rights leaders like Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman, pioneers like Amelia Earhart and two young women who defied the odds, Anne Frank and Malala Yousafzai. This poster reminds students at Puesta del Sol of the many ways that Women have left their mark on our collective history.
