Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Board Leadership


On Thursday, February 18, Management HQ will hold its "DEI in Board Leadership" forum exclusively for association board members and leaders.

Our panelists will:

  • Discuss the impact and advantages of sound diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategy and implementation on a board level;
  • Address board culture as a catalyst to advancing DEI principles and practices;
  • Provide applicable strategies to begin, or drive forward, this critical work;
  • Share action steps you can take to support your association in being equitable, inclusive and thriving.

Event Panelists
Dr. Jennifer Matthews, Associate Professor, Oakland University
Dr. Matthews is an Associate Professor at Oakland University in Michigan where her research focus is grief & loss and multicultural counseling. She is an active presenter and has published peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, she works with the bereaved in her private practice and provides clinical supervision to counseling graduates. She is engaged in community work and currently serves as a board member for the Association for Death Education and Counseling. Dr. Matthews has a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and an M.A. in Counseling. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a National Certified Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. 
Melvin Tennant, MA, CAE, President & CEO, Meet Minneapolis Convention and Visitors Association
Melvin is dedicated to service, having served on a broad array of association and nonprofit boards of directors. He currently serves on the board for Minneapolis’ Hennepin Theater Trust; he was a founding member and co-chair of Association North’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, a board member of the Chicagoland Association Forum, YouthLink MN, the Minnesota Superbowl Committee, and Minnesota Sports Corp. Melvin oversees the operations of Meet Minneapolis, including the professional and support staff. He serves as the voice of Meet Minneapolis through speaking engagements, civic activities and political council meetings. He has served as president and CEO of Meet Minneapolis since November 2007. Melvin also is the executive director of Sports Minneapolis.
Dr. Aida Martinez-Freeman, Managing Director, Management HQ
Dr. Martinez-Freeman is a strategic, equity-minded, innovative leader who translates organizational vision into transformative initiatives. Dr. Martinez-Freeman has dedicated her career to supporting equitable and inclusive work environments, and the talented individuals who make up these spaces. Serving as MHQ’s managing director, Dr. Martinez-Freeman drives organizational excellence by supporting systems, people and processes through a lens of diversity, equity and inclusion. She oversees the MHQ staff team and operations, ensuring stellar delivery of services to MHQ clients.

Dara is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) with more than 20 years' proven success in serving associations that are determined to thrive. She strives to be a supportive white ally in the work toward diversity, equity and inclusion in both our association communities and our greater world. To date, she has engaged dozens of team members to serve 10,000+ members, implement the vision of 25 boards of directors, manage hundreds of volunteers, and deliver nearly one thousand stellar events. She was a founding member and co-chair of the Associations North Diversity and Inclusion committee, and currently supports the Meet Minneapolis Diversity Multicultural Action Committee in a leadership role.
