2020 Spelling Bee Club News
This year's
Spelling Bee Club
was a great success!
Students at Berkeley Hills and Wexford in grades 4-6 were invited to join the spelling bee club and this year we had
19 participants
! In the club, students
learned and practiced spelling rules
as well as
strategies to spell multi-syllabic words
. Each grade practiced for 20 minutes a week (one recess) beginning in mid-September through late January. Students also worked at home for extra practice time to be prepared for the competition.
This year's Spelling Bee campus champions were Nina Oliver, fifth grade Berkeley Hills, and Jack Nelson, sixth grade Wexford
. They will attend the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee at Robert Morris University on March 7.
In addition, Nina and Jack placed in the ACSI Spelling Bee in November. They advanced to the next ACSI Spelling Bee level and will compete in Lancaster, PA later this month.
Congratulations!

Faith-Filled Friday
February 21
We are excited to have
Berkeley Hills students join us here at the Wexford campus for Faith-Filled Friday special activities
in partnership with Urban Impact Foundation through Project Penpal.
- Our Paperback Book Drive (new, K-grade 3 reading level books) for children at Pittsburgh King Elementary School is underway. You can help by sending donated books to your child's classroom teacher by Friday morning (Feb. 21). Our goal is 120 books!
- On Friday, students in grades 1-6 will write letters to the students at Pittsburgh King Elementary and make bookmarks that will accompany each book that is donated.
What is Urban Impact Foundation and Project Penpal?
Urban Impact Foundation (UIF)
is a Christian non-profit on the North Side of Pittsburgh that serves at-risk students. Their mission is to, through the gospel of Christ, impact lives on the North Side one person, one family, one block at a time.
Project Penpal
is an upper school graduation project that started in 2016 and, this year, is being facilitated by Ryan Aiken, Elijah Manges, and Joey Rothacher. The project is a pen pal collaboration between Eden upper school students and 1st and 2nd grade students at Pittsburgh King Elementary. The goal of the project is to connect and unite students across cultures and ages.
Why is Eden investing in this project?
Urban Impact and Pittsburgh King work with at-risk students on the North Side.
The need is great
. Outside of school, these students face immense hardships that are foreign to most 7 and 8 year-old children.
Few of the students at Pittsburgh King have personal access to a grade-level book in their home
. For the past few years, Project Penpal has come alongside the students by providing a book for each of their Pittsburgh King penpals. This year the project expanded to include 1st grade students at Pittsburgh King and the number of participating students doubled!
Your donation to the
Paperback Book Drive
will bring light to the students on the North Side.

A Not So Terrible Parable
Performed by Berkeley Hills and Wexford students
It was a dark and stormy night . . .

Please join us for mystery, candlelight, organ music, strange pizza toppings, and our host, Alistair McAlister,
in this Master’s Peace Theater re-creation of the
parable that Jesus told about the Good Samaritan.
Important Notes:
