Gold Rush Elementary
Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year
WELCOME TO THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR
We are excited to start the 2020-2021 school year! After an opening delay and weeks of planning, we can't wait to see our students and families! Our students are the heart of our school, and we are eager to have them back in our classrooms.

We have been busy planning for a safe and meaningful return. Revised procedures and plans and opening events are listed in detail below. You will continue to receive updates from me via a weekly Friday email.

We have an incredible community that I feel fortunate to be a part of. All of Gold Rush is looking forward to a great year together!
COHORT ASSIGNMENTS & CLASS LISTS

As you are aware, the District is currently offering parents the option of either 100% eLearning or a hybrid model. Differences between these two options are shown below.
All parents are asked to register their child via Express Check-In and identify their preference for the fall semester. Express Check-In will close on Monday, August 3.  Click here for the link to Express Check-In.

The District will divide families who select the hybrid model into cohort A or B after Express Check-In closes to ensure that families with students in elementary, middle and high school remain in the same cohort. They are planning to release this information to schools toward the end of next week. Gold Rush will then have the opportunity to ensure that the number of students within each cohort is balanced.

We will release teacher names to parents by Friday, August 7. You will also receive a welcome letter and an online sign up for Meet Your Teacher, which is described below. Cohort groups will be shared on Monday, August 10.
THE SCHOOL DAY IN THE HYBRID MODEL
THE CLASSROOM

On the first full week of school (week of August 24), students will walk through their assigned doors and head directly to their classrooms. Students will be in groups of 10-12 for in-person learning. Their desks will be spaced 3-6 feet apart and they will all face forward. Students will have their own school supplies in their own desks or assigned spots. Students should have water bottles as all drinking fountains will be closed. Markers will be placed in key areas throughout the room, such as the carpet, in line for the sink and the line to the door to ensure social distancing.

During in-person learning, students will engage in reading, writing, math, social studies and science. During remote days, students will be given activities and videos that align to the instruction they received in-person.

Fridays will be a combination of live virtual instruction and assigned online activities. Please see a sample Friday schedule below. Your child will have an opportunity to connect with all of the students in his/her class, meet in small academic groups and participate in specials.  Your teacher will send your child’s specific Friday schedule and assigned small group times by the end of the day on Friday, August 21st.  Please know that your child's Friday schedule may change as his/her needs evolve. Friday schedules will begin on Friday, August 28.
LUNCH

Grade level lunch and recess schedules have been redesigned to ensure social distancing, hand washing and classroom groups (referred to in health guidelines as cohorts). Prior to lunch, all students will be asked to wash their hands in their classroom. All students will take their own lunches to the cafeteria where they will sit with their class only. Students will still have an opportunity to purchase prepackaged grab and go lunches.

Students will sit on preplaced spots that have been spaced 3-6 feet apart. Students will take their own lunch boxes out to recess. Lunch tables will be cleaned between grade levels. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate parents or relatives for lunch at this time.

RECESS

Students will remain with their class of 10-12 students only during recess. They will rotate between our play areas - the front and back playgrounds, front and back black top and field - over the course of the week. We know that our students will have fun exploring each area with their classmates! Students will not be required to wear their mask while eating lunch or when they are outside of the building.

SPECIALS

In addition to providing a comprehensive academic program, Gold Rush is committed to having students explore the arts and engage in physical activity. Students will continue to have art, music, physical education, library and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math).

Teachers of these disciplines have redesigned their curriculum to foster students’ curiosity, creativity and movement in safe ways. Students will continue to social distance, remain with their class and use their own materials in specials. In music, students will explore notes and rhythm using instruments rather than singing. In physical education, students will do more individual activities versus high contact games, and in art, students will use their own supplies.
REVISED SCHOOL PROCEDURES

ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL MAP
Click here for a link to the arrival and dismissal map

Arrival Procedures:

Gold Rush has had tremendous success with our rolling start! If you are returning to Gold Rush, you are aware that all students enter the building between 8:20-8:30 AM and head directly to their classroom. This year grade levels will be assigned additional entrances that will be staffed at all times by GRE teachers.

As shown on the map above, students will enter the following doors:

  • Kindergarten students and Mrs. Steinher's class will enter using their classroom’s exterior door.
  • First and second grade students will enter using the main entrance.
  • Third graders will enter using the northeast sidewalk doors.
  • Fourth graders will enter through the kindergarten doors via the back playground.
  • Fifth graders will enter the doors through the gym on the back playground.
  • Ms. Jung and Mrs. Leuschner’s classes will also enter through the gym on the back playground.

The doors at all entrances will open right at 8:20 AM and students will enter. Your classroom teacher will show your child how to enter the building and proceed to his/her classroom during Meet Your Teacher (additional details below). Additional adults will be present to support and guide students during our first full week back to school.

It is imperative that students are not dropped off prior to 8:20 AM, unless they have a previously scheduled meeting/activity.  In order to maintain social distancing, we ask that all students do not walk up to school or exit their car until 8:20 AM. As was the case in prior years, students are also not allowed to play on the playground before school.

If parents/relatives plan to walk their child up to his/her entrance, they must wear a mask and socially distance themselves from other families.

Dismissal Procedures:
In order to ensure that students and families are able to social distance, we will stagger dismissal times for primary and intermediate students. Please see the schedule below.
3:20 PM Grades K-2
Students in grades K-2
Students with siblings in grades K-2
Students in grades K-2 who ride the bus will meet in the library
BASE students check into the cafeteria
K-2 students and siblings can walk home

3:30 PM Grades 3-5
All other students in grades 3-5
Rolling Carloop will begin
Buses for students in grades K-5 will be loaded
Students in grades 3-5 will walk home

Students in all grade levels will exit the building using the same door that they use to enter at arrival. Teachers in the primary grades will walk their students out and wait at their identified location until all students have met their parent or older sibling. At 3:30 teachers will walk students to the field who are being picked up in the carloop.

Students in grades K-2 that are transitioning to BASE will proceed directly to the cafeteria at 3:20, and older siblings will be asked to meet their brother or sister in grades K-2 at their teachers’ identified meeting area. Please see the map above for teachers' specific locations.

Parents continue to have the choice to park and meet their child at their teacher's identified location or use our rolling car loop. Please note that the car loop for all students will not begin until 3:30. Similar to before school, all playgrounds will also be closed after school.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

There are several additional classroom and school procedures and practices that we will be taking to incorporate current health guidelines. Please see additional measures below:

Masks
  • All GRE staff are required to wear a mask and/or face shield in the building at all times.
  • All students are required to wear a mask in the building at all times.
  • All visitors are required to wear a mask while on school grounds.

Materials
  • Students will have their own supplies in the classroom and specials areas.

Cleaning
  • Classrooms, bathrooms and lunch areas will be cleaned at set intervals throughout the day using District approved products.

Health
  • Hand sanitizers will be placed in all classrooms and specials areas.
  • Students will use hand sanitizer before accessing the library.
  • There will be an identified location in the office for students and staff presenting with COVID symptoms.

Volunteering

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate additional adults in the building at this time. While we will be postponing in-school volunteer opportunities, teachers will share other opportunities to support at Back to School Night. At this time, parents are also unable to eat lunch with their child or visit during recess. We know that these are special times for families, and we will share as soon as we are able to resume them.

School Traditions

One of the things that makes Gold Rush unique is our honored traditions, including Western Night and our annual fun run called the Digger Dash. We have moved these events to the spring with the sincere hope that we are able to gather together and celebrate in the later part of the year.
BEGINNING OF THE YEAR EVENTS

OPTIONAL MEET YOUR TEACHER
 AUGUST 12, 13 or 14

A strong relationship between a teacher and a student’s family is essential for an exceptional school year. We believe that families should have an opportunity to get to know your child’s teacher prior to the first day of school. Our purpose for Meet Your Teacher is to build lasting relationships, gain an understanding of your child’s interests, strengths and goals and understand parents’ hopes.

While our purpose is the same, Meet Your Teacher will look slightly different this year. Parents will sign up for an individual 20-minute time slot on either August 12, 13 or 14 via an online schedule sent by your classroom teacher on August 7. The time slots are first come first serve so you are encouraged to register for a time early, especially if you hope to coordinate siblings’ schedules.

You will meet your child’s teacher outside of the building at an assigned location.

  • Kindergarten families will meet their teacher outside of their classroom’s exterior door.
  • First and second grade teachers will be on the front black top.
  • Fourth and fifth grade teachers will be on the back playground.
  • Third grade teachers will be on the bus loop with the exception of Ms. Jung’s class and Mrs. Leuschner’s class, who will meet on the back playground.

Please see your teacher’s exact location below. You will notice a cone with your teacher’s name printed on it and spaced chairs for parents. If there is inclement weather, teachers will connect virtually with you at your scheduled time.

Parents will be able to share important information about their child. Our teachers are extremely excited to get to know your family.

We ask parents to socially distance from other families while you are on school grounds and wear masks.   In order to ensure we are able to meet with each family individually, we will keep to the 20-minute session.  As always, we appreciate your cooperation!

DEVICE PICK UP FOR 100% eLEARNING ONLY
AUGUST 12 & 13 @ 1:00-3:00 PM

Families that have chosen 100% elearning only will have the opportunity to pick up a device for each of their children on August 12 or 13 from 1:00-3:00 PM. This will be done through curbside pick up. We ask that families drive through our carloop and pull up to the front shade structure.  Please have a name plate displaying your children’s first and last name and grade level on your passenger side window . Gold Rush staff members wearing both a mask and gloves will place the device in your trunk.

This device pick up is for 100% eLearning families only. Students who are attending in-person will be given their device on their orientation days, which are described below. You will receive information regarding procedures for students traveling to and from school with a device, a device contract and GRE tech norms on your child’s first day.

K-5 STUDENT ORIENTATION WEEK
AUGUST 17-20

The District decided to have all students start the week of August 17 for one day only. Prior to this announcement, only kindergarten students were allowed small group transition days, referred to as Balanced Beginnings. Now all students K-5 will attend with a small group of 4-5 students.

You will sign up for one day the week of the 17th using Canyon Creek’s online scheduler. A link to the scheduler will be sent in future communication. This will be done on a first come first serve basis. We ask families who are in cohort A to sign up on Monday or Wednesday and families who are in cohort B to sign up on Tuesday or Thursday. After this week, siblings will be assured to attend in-person on the same days of the week.

Teachers will use these days to build a classroom community, review classroom practices and discuss safety procedures. They will also have a chance to begin to develop a lasting relationship with your child. They will have the opportunity to read with your child one on one and determine his/her strengths and goals.
Your child should plan on meeting his/her teacher outside at the teachers’ assigned location at arrival. This is the same location as Meet Your Teacher and can be seen on the map above. Your child will be waiting at this same location at dismissal.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
COHORT A: MONDAY, AUGUST 24
COHORT B: TUESDAY, AUGUST 25

Students in cohort A will have their first full day of school on Monday, August 24, and students in cohort B will begin on Tuesday, August 25. Students will proceed through their assigned entrance and head directly to their classroom between 8:20-8:30 AM. Students will watch our traditional opening flag ceremony, viewed virtually this year, in their classroom. Parents will receive a link to the flag ceremony so you too can kick off the year with us!

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
SEPTEMBER 2 @ 4:30-5:00 PM & 5:10-5:40 PM

It is also important for parents to have the opportunity to learn about classroom practices and procedures and grade level curricula and expectations. Our Back to School Night is an opportunity for parents to become acquainted with the workings of the classroom. Back to School Night, scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, will be offered remotely. You will receive two Zoom invites so you can determine the time that evening that works best. Your child’s teacher will speak with you while in their classroom. You will also receive a school wide presentation geared towards parenting during the pandemic.
SUPPLY LISTS
Click here for grade level supply lists. We are still asking that all students selecting the hybrid model bring these materials. Children will not share supplies this year. All students will be provided with a school device.
