Each week there will be an ice breaker, which will include an audio/visual education, guided meditation or relaxation technique. Students are encouraged to express their goals or dreams with the creation of a vision board.

4-H Year End

At the end of each 4-H year, club leaders and parents of independent members are asked to summarize the accomplishments of each Monroe County 4-H member. The information is used, in part, in anticipation of the annual Monroe County 4-H Program achievement event.

This event, typically scheduled for early to mid-autumn, is designed to recognize the accomplishments of 4-H members for the previous 4-H year, and to provide an opportunity for peer members, volunteer leaders, families, and 4-H staff to celebrate those accomplishments.

Youth are recognized for project completion or advancement, community service, growth, leadership, and more. The purpose of recognition is to encourage and support the efforts of youth members in improving their knowledge and development of life skills, while promoting self-confidence.

To be recognized at the achievement event, it is necessary for each member to complete the 4-H Experience Form for the 4-H year. Cloverbuds may need the help of an adult to complete the form.

Due by Friday, October 1:
Featured Activity of the Month

Solar Oven S’mores!
Outdoor cooking in a pizza box?! Yes, it is possible. In this activity, youth will explore how you can use sunlight to cook food. Check out supplies needed and activity steps at https://4-h.org/about/4-h-at-home/solar-oven-smores/ .

Example Activity Plan
Anchor: Ask your youth, who has cooked food outdoors before? What did they make?

Add: Share that today you will be making solar oven s’mores! Show the supplies you will use and ask youth to brainstorm how they can use these supplies to capture energy from the sun. Share that aluminum is a conductive material. Ask youth if they can think of other conductive materials such as copper, nickel, and steel.

Apply: Build solar ovens and cook s’mores.

Away: Reflect on the activity with the following questions from National 4-H…
1)     How do you think tin foil helps cook the s’mores?
2)     Why does the entire box need to be covered in tin foil?
3)     Why do you think it takes so long to cook them in the sun vs. at a campfire?
4)     Why should you place the box on a concrete surface instead of grass?
5)     How does preheating the box help the s’mores cook?
6)     What are some ways you could make the s’mores heat up faster?

Check out 4-H STEM Lab resources (https://4-h.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/stemlab-hughesnet-solar-smores.pdf) and other at-home activities from National 4-H (https://4-h.org/about/4-h-at-home/ )!
