Michaelmas
From the Festivals Committee
"Michaelmas time, Michaelmas time," begins one of the songs that we sing in our Michaelmas assembly every year. Signs that it is that time of year are popping up around our campus. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, as the days get shorter and autumn comes knocking at our door, bringing with it the cold crisp autumn air, we prepare ourselves for a new season to arrive. All cultures have a way to mark the change of season. For us at WWS (and at many other Waldorf schools) it begins with celebrating Michaelmas.

Michaelmas has its roots in pre-Christian Celtic times and is named for Michael who is a powerful angelic figure in Judaic, Christian, and Islamic tradition. Michael is often depicted holding a sword to the throat of a dragon and subduing it. Michaelmas ultimately calls on the conscious courage it takes to learn to know ourselves (source: Linda Sawyers). The day conjures up images of courage and hope. Traditionally, Waldorf schools around the world celebrate this day in various ways, often involving a play depicting the story of Michael and the dragon and games where the children can show strength and courage.

The stories that are shared around Michaelmas time have changed over the years to include stories of courage and hope from around the world. This year’s second grade teacher Ms. Morley has put much thought and effort into finding a story that works for her class and the times.
“The second grade play shares the theme of courage through a story from Chennai, India. Shiva, as Nataraja, faces a demon who threatens to bring pain, sadness and suffering to humankind. Shiva protects the people by dancing and imprisoning the demon beneath one of Shiva’s feet. The class heard a follow up story about the courage of Shiva and the beautiful white cow, Nandi, who is Shiva’s companion." - Ms. Morley

The play and lyrics were written by Ms. Morley and the music was written by Mr. Bender. Both were supported by the Rao family who offered cultural background and insight into the stories of Shiva. The scarves that the students wear are called dupattas, the drums are called tablas, and the rhythm sticks are used in traditional dance and celebrations.
Festivals are an integral part of life at a Waldorf School. They bring rhythm and nourishment to the school community through the seasons. The Michaelmas Festival is a time to test one’s strength and courage.
Michaelmas Activities
On Monday, the high school held their traditional Michaelmas time of reflection gathered around a fire pit.

Early this morning, the seniors jumped into the work of creating a chalk dragon and a sand dragon as visual centerpieces for the Michaelmas celebration. The 3rd grade navigated their own obstacle course around the blacktop. Late in the morning the Lower School gathered on the blacktop for a Michaelmas assembly. The students were welcomed by Kate Knuth (G8 Class Teacher) who spoke about Greta Thunberg as an example of someone who demonstrates courage as she speaks from her convictions.

The 2nd graders performed their play (see above for more information), Señora Tapia led the singing of a Spanish song, the 5th graders gave a eurythmy performance, two 8th grade students recited a poem about dragon bread in German, and the 6th grade played and led the singing of "Michaelmas Time".

Before lunch, the 1st and 12th graders played hopscotch together on the chalk dragon.

Christian Community Rite of Passage/Confirmation Class
from Carol Petrash (Former WWS Faculty and Alumni Parent)

Warm greetings to the Waldorf community from the Greater Washington - Baltimore Christian Community! We are holding regular services, following COVID safety protocols, in the chapel on our beautiful property, which includes a biodynamic garden, in College Park, MD and wanted to let you know about a rite of passage opportunity for your middle school aged children. The Christian Community is a worldwide movement for religious renewal that was founded in the early part of the 20th century by a group of clergy with the help of Rudolf Steiner.

This fall, Rev. Emma Heirman (WWS Alum 2003) and her husband Rev. Matthias Giles will offer a yearlong class for 7th and 8th graders, leading to confirmation for the 8th graders in the spring of 2022. This is an opportunity for the young people to meet and talk about life questions in the context of faith and a non dogmatic Christian view of the world. You do not need to be members of the Christian Community for your children to attend these gatherings.

For further information about any of our offerings, please contact our priests:
Rev. Emma Heirman: emma.heirman@gmail.com
Rev. Matthias Giles: matthiasgiles@gmail.com

I would also gladly speak with anyone who has an interest in the confirmation classes (all three of our children were confirmed) or the Christian Community in general.
