New High-Efficiency Commercial Clothes Drying System Promises to Run at Half the Energy & Save Laundries Up to $2.5 Billion
|
Hotel laundries and other businesses that use commercial clothes dryers could soon be using a game-changing technology that reduces energy costs up to 70 percent, saves water, and helps the environment. Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) and Gas Technology Institute (GTI) announced recently they have completed a proof-of-concept feasibility study on a new high-efficiency clothes drying technology that reduces natural gas use, saves money, and lowers greenhouse gas emissions. The new technology can be used in hotels, restaurants, hospitals, laundromats, multifamily housing laundries, and industrial laundry facilities.

SCE Supports California Climate Goals with New Electrification Pathway to 2045
|
The now-constant threat of wildfires in California driven by climate change signals a climate crisis that can no longer be ignored. Greenhouse gas reduction to address climate change is critical, will require urgent action and will take many years to achieve. Simply stated, we cannot wait. SCE released its white paper, “Pathway 2045,” today, a report that examines the profound changes that will need to take place for the state to reach carbon neutrality by 2045. The pathway builds on the utility’s "The Clean Power and Electrification Pathway” released in 2017.

WRD Celebrates Grand Opening of the Albert Robles Center
It is an exciting time for the Water Replenishment District. This November marks
WRD
’s 60th Anniversary of managing local groundwater resources for Southern Los Angeles County. In addition, WRD recently celebrated the Grand Opening of the
Albert Robles Center for Water Recycling and Environmental Learning (ARC). WRD is proud to report that with the completion of this project, we have created a completely locally sustainable source of water for groundwater replenishment! Maximizing the use of local recycled water helps us provide a drought-proof water supply for our service area which includes over 4 million residents.
As the climate changes, Southern California will need to continue to look for other sources of water. Fortunately, WRD has been working
on water sustainability for several years and we have had the foresight to tackle these issues before they become a larger
problem. In addition to ARC, WRD’s Board of Directors has also approved the Regional Brackish Reclamation Program, a plan
to extract, purify, and reuse well over a hundred billion gallons of brackish (salty) water trapped in underground aquifers below South Bay cities in Los Angeles County. We estimate this volume of water could provide 20 million gallons of water a day for 30 years! In addition to providing a new local water source, it also creates space for future groundwater storage.

Water Recycling Demonstration Plant in Carson to Develop New Local Water Source
In a major step toward the potential construction of one of the largest water recycling plants in the nation, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the
Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County were recently joined by federal, state and local water leaders to celebrate the start of operations at the Regional Recycled Water Advanced Purification Center. The 500,000-gallon-per-day demonstration facility takes cleaned wastewater from the Sanitation Districts’ Joint Water Pollution Control Plant and purifies it using an innovative process that could significantly improve efficiencies and reduce costs in water recycling.

LADWP Headquarters Achieves LEED Zero Energy
|
In September, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) downtown headquarters, the John Ferraro Building (JFB), achieved LEED Zero Energy, making it the first building in California to receive this certification. LEED Zero, a program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), complements the building’s LEED Gold certification received in 2016. Having already received previous LEED certifications (LEED and LEED Gold) as a prerequisite, LADWP’s JFB was eligible to receive the LEED Zero certification as the building operated with net zero carbon emissions for the 2018 calendar year.

Full A Line (Blue) Service Between DTLA & Long Beach has Reopened
|
After a $350-million overhaul, regular train service between downtown L.A. and downtown Long Beach resumed for the first time since January. The project added crossover switches, new overhead power systems, some new tracks and a new train control system. This should result in fewer service delays. It will also be easier to move trains between tracks to get around maintenance work and service issues. All in all, Metro thinks this means service on the A Line — Metro’s oldest rail line, dating to 1990 — will be much more reliable than in the past.
