Greetings from sunny, gorgeous Vermont where we are experiencing an absolutely perfect "Blue Bird Day!"
I was curious about the origin of that expression and had to laugh when I found the following definition at UrbanDictionary.com:
"An expression often used by out-of-date ski bums and boarders describing an otherwise beautiful, blue and sunny day. The expression is entirely unrelated to spring or to bluebirds." Too funny.
There is a lot happening locally and we're in the midst of one of the busiest periods in the winter ski season. Some schools celebrate the President's Holiday with a vacation week before the holiday and others enjoy this second week. The good news is that having things staggered between the two weeks is great for the local economy and our lodging, dining and retail businesses are having a great winter!
Speaking of local businesses, the fine folks at Magic Mountain are killing it this winter! They've introduced snow making, upgraded lifts, augmented their grooming and revamped the lodge with great food and beverage service. And, there is live music
après ski and nightly on Fridays and Saturdays (much of it free!). I hope to see you there.
Until then, be well and stay in touch.

Londonderry Rescue Purchases New Ambulance
|
There is a shiny, brand-new, state-of-the-art ambulance in town! The Londonderry Volunteer Rescue Squad (LVRS) took delivery of the 2019 Ford F550 unit in late December at a cost of approximately $290,000. It features four-wheel drive (essential for our mountainous terrain) and a hydraulic suspension (essential for patient comfort on bumpy roads). That purchase price includes the patient compartment "build-out", a power-load cot (to save our aging rescuers' backs!) and federal and state mandated safety equipment ... but, it did not cover the actual medical equipment or supplies used for patient care.
Running on average about 500 calls per year, LVRS is an advanced life support (ALS) licensed ambulance service covering approximately 255 square miles and providing emergency medical services in the towns of Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru, South Londonderry and Weston, and parts of Stratton, Windham and Winhall. LVRS operates two ALS ambulances and a heavy-duty rescue truck that is equipped with vehicle extrication tools and water, back-country and mountain rescue equipment. LVRS also has a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) trailer with critical supplies for large emergencies.
Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate's broker/owner Claudia Harris and her husband John Wiley are long-serving volunteer Advanced EMTs, both with well over 2000 calls under their belts and LVRS is close to their hearts. LVRS's mission is to help the members of our community when they need us most - arriving with skilled, licensed EMS providers 24/7 and 365 days a year. LVRS is funded by the generosity of our community and local fundraising events, and has NEVER charged a patient for services. In fact, LVRS is the last all-volunteer squad in Vermont that provides FREE patient care and emergency transport.
Please consider a contribution; it might just help LVRS help you!

Vermont Mandates Heating Fuel Tank Inspections
|
Although not a new law, the deadline is fast approaching for your fuel oil providers to inspect and certify your above-ground fuel tank(s).
The Above Ground Storage (AST) Rules that went into effect on August 15, 2017, require inspections of all petroleum ASTs. The rule require that all tanks be inspected by August 15, 2020. The Vermont Fuel Dealers Association has estimated that there are approximately 120,000 residential heating oil ASTs and many are aging tanks that are several decades old.
All tanks must be inspected and certified as operational. Tanks not meeting the requirements will be "red tagged" with both a literal red tag placed at the tank and fill pipe and also electronically in a database. Fuel oil providers are prohibited from delivering fuel to those properties.
There are five reasons that an inspector would red-tag a tank:
- Buried or uncoated fuel lines
- Cracks, leaks, etc. (and no visible rust)
- Improper fill/vent (improperly or unevenly sized)
- No stable foundation (must be on concrete)
- No vent alarm (must have a fill-vent whistle)
Financial assistance is available from the State to assist Vermonters who earn less than $75,000 per year and cannot afford to replace a fuel tank.
Leaking ASTs are dangerous for human health and the environment and extremely costly to clean-up. The Agency of Natural Resources is optimistic that the number and severity of AST releases will be significantly reduced after Aug. 2020 and with the program in place for almost three years, they are already seeing evidence of fewer and less severe releases.
If your oil tank has not been inspected or you have questions, contact your fuel oil provider.

- Remove squash from oven and add to soup pot along with the chicken stock.
- Stir and cook at a low simmer for at least 15 minutes to get flavors to develop.
