Letter from the President
Greetings from a crazy hot and humid summer day in Regina. What a different time for us - some folks are going back to libraries and offices and some are still working from home. Planning meetings and programs seems to be a challenge. Should we plan for in-person, all virtual, or should it be a mix of formats? We have started planning our August

Board retreat/meeting. In previous years, we did this in person so that Board members could get to know each other and we could plan for the upcoming year. This year, we will be having this meeting virtually. It will still be a great board orientation and meeting, but we will definitely be missing out on some of that in-person interaction. I am excited to see the plans for Saskatchewan Library Week and Culture Days. Obviously, some things will be familiar, but creativity has gotten us thinking outside the box, and we will still be supporting libraries and their staff in getting some great programming done across all sectors and across the province. Invitation to New Committee Members
Committee work is significant in accomplishing the objectives of SLA. It is an excellent way to engage in matters that are important to the library community, and provides members with an avenue to make new contacts and have a new experience.
Committee work is now in transition and we are looking for new committee members.

Continuing Education Grants:
Applications Due August 15
Have a great idea for a workshop for library staff? Interested in attending a conference, workshop, or other professional development opportunity? SLA offers Continuing Education (CE) grants to provide and support relevant educational opportunities for its members. Applications for CE category one and two are now being accepted.

Maureen Woods Education Bursary: Applications due October 30
The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is pleased to accept applications for the Maureen Woods Education Bursary until October 30, 2020.
The $5000 bursary was established to promote the continued growth of professional librarianship in the province of Saskatchewan. It is open to all students enrolled in or accepted in an ALA-accredited graduate degree program in library and information science or equivalent at the time of the award. Applicants must be willing to take up residence and employment in Saskatchewan for a period of at least one year following completion of their MLIS program.

Saskatchewan Libraries and COVID-19
The Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan has allowed public libraries to reopen according to provincial guidelines as of June 29, 2020. We understand that it may take a while until libraries are fully prepared to reopen with the proper safety measures, and that the services provided may differ in each area of the province. SLA is monitoring the situation and will continue to provide information as it becomes available.
Meanwhile, libraries across Saskatchewan have been slowly returning to business with curbside pickup, contactless material returns and reopening branches. We have compiled a list of libraries that are currently providing services in Saskatchewan (as of July 25, 2020).
CFLA-FCAB Inviting Feedback: Code of Ethics for Catalogers
In 2019, the CFLA-FCAB Cataloguing and Metadata Standards Committee (CMSC) answered a call for Canadian participation in the development of a Code of Ethics for Catalogers and appointed May Chan to represent CFLA-FCAB on the Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee.
In June 2020, the Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee presented the release of the draft document (the video and slides are available for viewing)

CFLA-FCAB has translated the draft document into French and the draft Cataloguing Code of Ethics is now available for comment in
English
and
French
. Both documents will be available for comment until September 1, 2020.
The Canadian library community is invited to review and comment directly on the documents.

Title: Librarian, RCMP Depot Learning Resource Centre
Born and lived: I was born and raised in Saskatoon, but had been living in Montreal for the past 13 years. I just moved to Regina at the end of June.
Professional career and activities:
During my MLIS degree I worked at the Montreal Neurological Institute library and volunteered with Librarians Without Borders and the McGill Legal Clinic. I then spent two years as a law librarian at a small firm in Montreal specializing in Aboriginal Law, before relocating to Regina to work at the Depot Learning Resource Centre.

As we begin planning for busy fall programs, the size and shape of our programs must be adaptable to inside and outside activities, as well as the virtual world. In addressing these possibilities, SLA is providing video tools for your use, and grants that will help you make creative programs for your patrons.
Culture Days 2020: September 25 to October 25
Despite the uncertainty created by the current COVID-19 pandemic, SLA is still offering grants to member libraries, but at the moment we are unsure of whether gatherings and in-person programs will be possible. In light of this situation, SLA will be offering a number of one-hour videos created to spark interest in a new skill, a different author, or to engage with a new idea. Videos can be posted to your website or be broadcast within the library.
Need help funding your Culture Days program? SLA is offering ten $200 grants to member libraries to help celebrate Culture Days. Applications will be adjudicated by members of the SLA Program Committee and all decisions will be final. The deadline to apply is August 15, 2020.

Saskatchewan Libraries: Resilient in Changing Times
Saskatchewan Library Week (SLW) is a province-wide, annual event, which promotes the wonderful resources and services that libraries have to offer. Saskatchewan Library Week is celebrated throughout Saskatchewan in all types of libraries, in both urban and rural communities and by all age groups.

In the same way as Culture Days, SLA is offering one-hour videos for SLW. We are also offering twenty-five $250 grants to member libraries to help celebrate SLW. The deadline to apply is

TDSRC: Kids and Parent/Caregiver Surveys are Now Available
The TD Summer Reading Club Kids survey and Parent/Caregiver survey are now available on their website. The surveys are an important tool to help evaluate and improve the program, and will be available until late September.
TD Summer Reading Club Library Awards in 2020
COVID-19 has required libraries across Canada to develop new approaches to existing programs in order to meet the needs of all involved, from clients to staff. Because of the challenges in offering a modified summer reading program in 2020, the application requirements and criteria for the TD Summer Reading Club Library Awards are different this year.

Saskatchewan Public Libraries Reopening Plan: Reopening Resources

Regina Public Library Has Reopened Library Branches
Customers will experience significant changes, such as the removal of some furniture, installation of sneeze guards, revised floor plans, and the application of one-way traffic paths at several locations.
Resilient Together: Building School and Public Library Partnerships
Join Library Journal, School Library Journal, and school and public leaders for a three-week long virtual event on school district and public library partnerships.
This virtual event will explore the many benefits of school and public alliance to drive equitable access to information, improve community outcomes and achieve learning goals.
OSAC CANCELS 2020/2021 PERFORMING ARTS SEASON
Tour Dates to be Rescheduled
The Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC), along with its member arts councils announced today the decision has been made to postpone all tour dates in the 2020/2021 Season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. OSAC is working with its artist and agent partners to reschedule the dates whenever presenting is again feasible for its mostly volunteer presenters.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
