Abundance from Scraps

Jesus is able to feed us abundantly, even with scraps. He meets earthly needs by feeding the crowds and continues now to offer himself as holy meal, freely given to all, no matter their income or rank in society. Advertisers have trained us that what's proclaimed as FREE usually isn't. More often, it's a ploy to get our money for some other, larger, purchase. Today we are invited to trust and receive Jesus' free gift of love without mistrusting that he's got up his sleeve some scheme to swindle our money.

It can be hard to relax and trust God to take care of us and nourish us with the mere scraps we often see around us. We panic and take matters into our own hands instead of trusting. We experience that crushing sense of responsibility, not just to ourselves, but to our children or parents or other loved ones to keep them fed and clothed and healthy. Trusting as the crowd did that day seems completely foreign to those of us living in North America, abundant in resources.

With food freely given, with quantity enough to feed only a few, Jesus makes this miracle, and there are leftovers to clean up. But for most of us, belief comes slowly and warily when we've been burned by experience...
  • How will there be enough for all of us, when we've been the last one at the lunch line, the late arrival at the party, and everything's gone?
  • What if we see people in the crowd we don't want fed and jostle our way to the head of the line to get first choice?
  • Will it be fair? [Sundays and Seasons, 2020]

Trusting that our daily bread and even our very lives are in God's hands is hard to do as we grow older and burdened by responsibility. Thankfully, God has compassion for every member of the crowds gathered or scattered. Thankfully, we are all blessed and invited to be joyful recipients of God's generosity-no matter what! So beloveds, as recipients of God's freely given gracious love and merciful forgiveness, how do you choose to live?

Grace and peace,
Bill+

RINGING THE BELLS FOR JOHN LEWIS
On Thursday the bell tower at all Saints' Wolfeboro joined in tolling with bells across the nation to mark the funeral home going of American Civil Rights icon John Lewis.

LISTENING AND LOOKING FOR GOD IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

God is up to something new. As the Holy Spirit is moving ahead of the Church, calling the Church into a new future in a time of disruptive social and cultural change, you are invited to love God and neighbor by listening and looking for what God is already doing in our community.

We l isten and look to better discern what God is calling us to be a part of during this time. We listen and look to our neighborhood, those places you frequent including: where you work, where you live, where you worship, and where you play-physically and virtually during Covidtide. So as you walk and drive in your neighborhood and spaces online make note of how you see God in these spaces and share them via phone call, text, e-mail or mailed note with Pastor Bill. Be intentionally on the look-out for "God sightings" and take photos of them so they can be shared with one another here.

I COME TO THE GARDEN ALONE

I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses,
And the voice I hear falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
He speaks, and the sound of His voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me within my heart is ringing.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
I'd stay in the garden with Him, though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling.
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.
[C. Austin Miles, 1912]

The vestry has approved moving forward with a project to provide better access to
the All Saints' Memorial Garden. The project includes the installation of a 4' x 64' concrete paver pathway from the parking lot along the left side of the building with a 6' x 8' patio platform with a custom wrought iron railing. The patio area will be slanted away from the path to meet safety concerns for wheel chairs and there will be an additional 3' x 18' pathway along the side of the garden. Once the pavers and railings have been installed, we will explore additional seating (there is an existing granite bench), the addition of engraved brick* to edge the entrance, pathway or garden, and install a l attice fence to screen the HVAC units against the building.

We will utilize existing memorial garden and designated memorial funds to begin the project and are exploring funding options including *engraved bricks to honor or memorialize family and friends of All Saints'. Watch future e-news for project progress and giving opportunities as they are available. If you would like to serve as a Memorial Garden Angel and make a gift to help with start-up costs, please write "Memorial Garden Angel" on your check and mail or drop it off to the church office. Thank you

BECK LIBRARY UPDATE

The Beck Library now has over 1000 books cataloged, labeled, and on the shelves. Nearly 86% of the books fall into the Dewey Decimal 200s, Religion.  Of those, 20% pertain to the Bible.  We have a small number of children's books, and also some fiction.  Although all of the books out on the shelves are now cataloged, there are more books hiding in cupboards and behind chairs, so our numbers will continue to go up.
Nearly all of the books are from 1970 or newer.  The only older books are those pertaining to the history of the Episcopal Church, and a few other classics.
One thing we could use is bookends.  We don't have any, so the books all flop over.  This is the type that's best -

Staples sells them.  We need at least 20 pairs (40 bookends).

Our catalog is on LibraryThing:   BECK
The user name is AllSaintsWolfeboro
Password is +BeckLibrary+

I hope people visit the catalog and explore what we have.  There are pictures of the book covers, and I've begun putting in brief summaries of the books when it wasn't too time-consuming to do.

Enjoy!

RUN FOR HOPE HOUSE

This year's Run for Hope will be a virtual event!  You do not have to be "present" during the actual event, which occurs at 5:00 pm on August 6th, so weather conditions or time conflicts allow you to participate by running or walking 3.1 miles at any time... on the road, on an elliptical trainer, on a treadmill or even on a hike!

  • complete all 3.1 miles all at one time or in segments that add up to 3.1 miles.
  • ask friends and family to join our team even though they are not in Wolfeboro
No matter where you are, how you do it, and when you do it you can participate!

If you would like to register go to All Saints Team
and join the "All Saints" team. If you have any questions, please contact Deb Bunting.

Register at the level you wish: $25 gets you a t-shirt and a downloadable entry bib number you need to wear. You can also register at a lower price of $10 (you will not receive a t-shirt). You can, at that time, make an additional donation in any amount. Even if you cannot participate, consider donating to our team as a sponsor.

The Wolfeboro Library, in partnership with The Country Bookseller and Wolfeboro Reads, is hosting an online discussion of Debby Irving's memoir, "Waking Up White: and Finding Myself in the Story of Race" on Wednesday, August 19 at 7 pm . Books are Available to Borrow

Author Ibram X. Kendi challenges us: "History is calling the future from the streets of protest. What choice will we make? What world will we create? What will we be? There are only two choices: racist or anti-racist." A couple of copies of his book How to Be an Antiracist have been returned to the Church Office and are available for you to borrow.

Connect With God & With Others
"...have you ever found God in church? I never did. I just found a bunch of folks hoping for him to show. Any God I ever felt in church I brought in with me. And I think all the other folks did too. They come to church to share God, not find God." -Alice Walker

The church is where God's people-YOU-are. While we are in exile in our homes, we don't need to go to church to find God, because when we are church together on-line we share God. There are many ways to connect, to see, hear and share God online at All Saints'...

Thank You for Giving During This Time of Pandemic

Thank you for all who have continued to support the work of All Saints during this time. You may make contributions by mail, using your financial institution's automated check writing service, or secure online giving via  Donate

Creator of all we enjoy, we give you thanks for the countless people you have gathered to do your work as All Saints' Wolfeboro. We thank you for your Holy Spirit inspiring some as they longed for this church, others as they built this church and still others as they lovingly and boldly led this church through times of abundance and times of scarcity. Help us to be bold as we model giving of time and money during this time. Make our generous giving a symbol of both our faith and our gratitude. We pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
You Make A Difference

Is there an exceptional All Saints' volunteer we should recognize? Please share any recognition recommendations with our Senior Warden Carolyn Sundquist or Pastor Bill to bring to the Vestry for consideration. Who can we give thanks for the blessings they have shared with our congregation?

God Loves You!
