Dear Eisenhower Families,
With summer vacation fast approaching, we would like to take a moment to encourage that you keep up good, daily reading habits. In order to avoid “summer slide”, we have to make a concerted effort to keep reading and learning at the forefront of our schedules. Simply setting aside 20-minutes a day will give your child plenty of time to develop good reading habits. We hope you can set aside time to plan a weekly visit to one of our great local public libraries. Please have your child(ren) choose five to seven books that you can share reading with them. The best time spent reading with your child occurs when we are taking turns reading, and, most importantly, asking questions. While reading with your child, please remember to keep it a fun and preferred activity. Use character voices and read with expression. Most importantly, ask questions about the story. Challenge your child with open-ended questions that stimulate higher level thinking skills. The who, what, where, and when are important questions. However, we must challenge them with the how and why. The more they share their thoughts and learn to to express their ideas the greater they will grow in their confidence to use new sounds and vocabulary words.
We hope that next weekend you have a wonderful Memorial Day,
Your Eisenhower Family
