SRMS Newsletter

Dear Families,

Covid - Student/Teacher Testing:    Health and Human Services has made arrangements with specific locations across the state to prioritize students and school employees for COVID testing within 24 hours. This arrangement was made to expedite information that may help schools with contact identification and response. The links below can also be found on our school website.

A reminder there is no school on Monday January 18th in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King day. Wednesday January 20th will still be a half day for students. NWEA student reports will be mailed home to families on Tuesday, January 19th.

Team News:

Grade 7
We hope you are all doing well!  In-school students did a great job transitioning back to the building this week.

Class updates:

Math:  Last week we wrapped up our Eighteen Flavors task with a comparison of the tables and graphs for each ice cream shop.  I will be compiling our comparison noticings and posting them in our google classrooms with a study guide for our next summative.  This week we will continue our work in Open Up resources.  We will quickly review Lesson 6 (formative assessment) and then move on to Lessons 7 - 9.

Social Studies: Last week we finished up sharing student projects on World War 2 and started learning about the aftermath of the war.  This coming week we will focus on global interdependence, including the United Nations and world trade.
ELA: We read two additional science fiction stories this week and focused on how the author uses point of view to surprise the reader - “Little Green Men”, by Barry Longyear, and “Doorstep”, by Keith Laumer. Students are also in the process of writing their own fictional news stories about the day aliens land on Earth, following the inverted pyramid format. This coming  week, we will examine a short story written by Ray Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451.
Science:  This week students will learn more about DNA and Heredity, Meiosis and variation as well as mutations.  Students will do a simulation lab called, “Baby Genes” to learn how variation occurs.  You can reinforce the science lessons at home by talking about where each family member got their traits such as hair and eye color, smile, feet, mannerisms, etc.
Have a wonderful week!

Grade 8

Quarter 2 wraps up this week and we can’t believe half the year has gone by. Grade 8 students continue to be hard workers and we are impressed by their growth during a strange and tough year. In Social Studies, students investigated the death of King Tut. Was it murder or did he die of natural causes??? In ELA, students analyzed character development and theorized on authors’ goals and intentions. Science students have begun construction of their penguin shelters. Math continues with Pythagorean Theorem and functions and will have a summative at the end of next week.
Please continue to encourage independent reading at home! As always, we thank you for the support you provide at home.

Counselor's Corner:

Quarter 3 starts next Tuesday, January 19th! Students will begin their next rotation of Unified Arts classes. Students and parents will get an email from me with what their new UA’s are. Students should also have Google classroom invites from their new UA teachers - so check your e-mail for those!

I would to welcome our Student Assistance Counselor, Amanda Feeney, back! She works with middle and high schoolers on drug and alcohol education and prevention and provides social emotional support for a variety of other student concerns. She is a wealth of knowledge and is always happy to work with students on any issues they may have. She can be reached at afuller@sau17.net

Please check out my “virtual office” on our School Counseling home page for resources, information, and more.

SRMS Student Attendance Expectations 2020-2021
This year at SRMS we will be tracking attendance a little differently than we historically have. This is to ensure your child’s safety in our building and to be consistent across the middle and high schools. If your child will be absent, late, dismissed early, or will miss a class period please use Pickup Patrol to report this absence as an excused absence. Any absences that have not been reported through Pickup Patrol will be marked as unexcused. Teachers will be taking attendance at the beginning of each period. If your child misses one or more classes during the day and it has not been documented through Pickup Patrol, the absence will be marked as unexcused and an automated email will be sent home from Renee LeBlanc. If you get a message and have information or documentation as to why your child’s absence should be excused, please contact Renee LeBlanc at rleblanc@sau17.net.
