Bunny Ears

A rabbit’s ears serve two key functions.
  • First they help the animal to monitor its environment and detect predators. Rabbits can pick up sounds over considerable distances, perhaps up to 3km. Their ears can be rotated 270 degrees to help detect the source of a sound, and can revolve independently to monitor different noises.
  • Second, they assist in thermoregulation. A rabbit’s ears contain an extensive network of blood vessels that provide a large surface area for heat exchange. These vessels swell when the rabbit is hot, and contract when it is cool, so much so that they are barely visible in cold weather.
  • Ear length is relative not to body proportions but to climate. The hotter the climate, the longer their ears to help them cope with the hotter conditions.
Marsh Rabbit

This pretty lady is a Marsh Rabbit.
  • Marsh rabbits are in fact Cottontails, but are quite different than the common Eastern Cottontails. We almost never get these guys in as they are often found near the coast. For whatever reason this beautiful lady made her way inland and unfortunately collided with a car. Thankfully her injuries were minimal and she made a full recovery.
  • We would like to take a moment and talk about how neat these rabbits are! First off, check out the hind feet on this lady! Less fur on the feet and long nails help these animals maneuver through the water. Marsh rabbits also have shorter ears than eastern cottontails and prefer to walk on all fours rather than hop! A walking and swimming rabbit! These guys sure know how to do things differently!

Rescue Advice - Nests
  • Baby rabbits can be returned to the nest even after it has been accidentally uncovered or disturbed. Even though you may not see the mother when you find a nest; mom is probably hiding nearby watching your every move.
  • A lot of times people think the mom is dead because they see her fur, but a momma rabbit will pull out her fur and line the nest.
  • If the nest has been disturbed, wipe hands on the grass before replacing any fur or nesting material and babies. Place a long string or stick pattern neatly across the entire nest. If the pattern has not been disturbed within 12 hours, then assume the babies are in need of rescue.
  • Baby rabbits grow quickly and are own their own at about 4 weeks old. If pets or children pose a risk to the nest, then simply keep them away for a couple of weeks and allow the rabbits to grow and move on.
  • If your pet has found a rabbit’s nest and brought one to you, follow your pet to the nest. Unless you can keep you pet inside, all of the babies will need to be rescued or your pet will return for each one.
