Tour season delayed until May 2 (for now)
Oh, no! The kangaroos are sad that the opening of tour season is delayed until at least May 2 due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines. They hope to see you sometime this tour season!

We will keep you posted about tour availability on our website. Until then, check out our virtual tourThis video is divided into a dozen different chapters, so you can watch a few at a time and learn about what goes into caring for cows, growing crops, and making dairy products. And if you make it to the end, there's a section about the funny things our  kangaroos do ... complete with sound effects :)
Easter hams are here!
Our delicious Easter hams are in stock and ready for purchase!

Your Easter plans undoubtedly look a little different this year, and maybe you are serving fewer people than normal. But our holiday hams are great for leftovers and can be made into a variety of homemade meals once you've had your Easter fill.

Hansen's Hams are supplied from Webster City Custom Meats in Webster City, Iowa. They are bone-in, shankless, cured only with their own natural juices, certified hickory-smoked hams made especially for Hansen's customers. There are two sizes: half hams (7-9 pounds, serves 10, $3.65/lb) and whole hams (15-18 pounds, serves 20, $3.50/lb).

Order yours through our online stores (see Mercato article above) and you can easily reach the $35.00 minimum order for $10 off!

To use this month's coupon on Mercato, enter "HAMCOUPON" in Delivery Instructions box and note Whole, 1% or Skim for your choice of free milk(s). You can also show the coupon on your mobile device or mention the deal at Pickup.
Customer of the Month
Lee and Debra Rottinghaus and grandson Jackson
April Customer of the Month Debra Rottinghaus  and her family of Jesup started drinking Hansen's milk when they had six growing children in their home.

"I remember that we started at 5-6 gallons per week and later got up to 10 gallons per week!" she said.

One day while getting milk at the store, she met delivery manager Brent Hansen.

"He mentioned that he drove past our place to deliver milk to Jesup. Since it was on the way, he offered to drop off milk to us at the house," she said. "We love this guy! For years we enjoyed his genuine help, contagious smile, quick wit, and of course, great milk.  Sadly, we were later told that the truck was no longer going to be delivering to the Jesup grocery store. However, by then we couldn't give up our Hansen Dairy milk."

They now shop at Hansen's Dairy in Waterloo. They drink 1% milk and enjoy the cheese curds. Their favorite ice cream flavors are Caramel Cup ("which you need to make more often," she said), Cookie Dough, Cookies and Cream, Candy Bar, and Mint Chocolate Chip.

"We love the taste!" she said. "I also like the different samples of chocolates, breads, and cheeses that come through and are offered throughout the year."

Thanks, Debra! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Cow of the Month
Well there's always one, isn't there?

We have to chuckle at Doshy, who apparently likes to go her own way. While all the other cows choose to face the wall in their beds, Doshy just wants to be able to see the world. She also stands out because she is a beautiful Red and White Holstein with a deep mahogany-colored coat.

Doshy also comes from Hansen's Dairy "royalty." She is a great-granddaughter of Dazzle, who at age 14 became the oldest cow to live on the farm, and produced over 300,000 pounds of milk in her lifetime. Doshy is on her way to being a good producer as well, with 24,000 pounds of milk in her first lactation. That's well above average!

Doshy is fun to work with and is a farm favorite. Keep being you, Doshy!
recipe
Cooking with Hansen's
Samantha, the Hansen's Dairy Cedar Falls Store manager, gave me the idea for the recipe this month.  It took me back to French Class in high school where I first learned about and actually made crepes!  As a thin pancake, a crepe can be either sweet and dessert-like or savory and meal-like. You could even have a crepe bar with a variety of toppings!  For more recipes that make homemade easy and delicious, check out my website www.juliegrunklee.com .

Create-Your-Own Crepes
Prep/cook time: 30 minutes
Serves 4 or more
* Items that can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy stores

Ingredients
  • 2 eggs*
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup Hansen's Dairy Milk*
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • Quarter tsp salt
  • 2-4 Tablespoons Hansen's Dairy Butter*
Possible Toppings
Savory crepes: Cooked vegetables, herbs and spices to taste, plus these ingredients available at Hansen's stores: sour cream, cheese, pork or beef sticks, bacon, ham, meat, sautéed onions, salsa, hummus, tabbouleh, spring greens, micro greens

Sweet crepes:  Cut fruit, plus these ingredients available at Hansen's stores: jam, honey, yogurt, maple syrup, whipped cream (made from Hansen's cream)

Directions
  • Chop and cook any meat or vegetables you intend to use.
  • Beat eggs, water and milk together. Add flour and salt. Mix well to form a thin pancake batter.
  • Heat 10-inch skillet on medium high heat. Add a tablespoon of butter and coat pan as it melts.
  • Pour about 1/4 cup batter onto pan, immediately tilting pan to spread batter out to form a very thin pancake. Cook until the edges start to dry a little and the center is set. Flip with a large spatula. Cook other side until slightly brown.
  • Remove from pan and repeat until all batter is used, making sure the pan is adequately greased before adding new batter. Fill half of crepe with toppings, then fold in quarters OR fill and roll crepe. Enjoy!
