Superintendent Communications - Mar 30
Dear Roxbury Community:
Spring Break is coming! We are all starting to feel the excitement that comes from warmer weather and perhaps, the happy anticipation of life returning to normal in the future. But we are NOT THERE YET and WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! It may be tempting to engage in “normal” behavior over spring break, but we need to proceed with caution and common sense.
The purpose of this correspondence is two-fold: to implore your cooperation and to share our hopes. The key factor in the success of this district continues to be YOU! You are wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining social distances. We need you to continue to be aware of your health and the health of your family.
Undoubtedly, many families have plans for Spring Break. You may be traveling or planning some day trips with friends. Please continue to use caution and common sense. To ensure that you have time to quarantine and evaluate the health of your family, we will transition to remote learning for the week of April 12th. We understand how difficult it is to recognize if a sore throat and runny nose is due to a cold, allergies or Covid-19, but we ask that you be especially cautious. If family members are feeling ill, awaiting Covid-19 test results, have been a direct contact, or have traveled, have your children stay home for a few days until it can be determined that the children can safely attend school without the possibility of spreading the virus. Without that caution, we will be forced to quarantine others. We truly need your cooperation, vigilance, and willingness to take a few days to ensure wellness for your family and others. Hopefully, the week of remote learning will provide you with time to observe your family’s health and make decisions that will support the health of all. Without this pause and reflection, we are left to conduct contact tracing, make notifications, and quarantine students as appropriate. Most recently, it has caused Lincoln Roosevelt school to transition to remote learning for a week and the high school has experienced an upward trend in positive cases. That’s how important our families and their decisions are to the health and direction of our district. Therefore, I implore you to take these cautions under consideration as we move into spring break, and again, I sincerely thank you for partnering with us and ask you to continue to reach out to our school nurses and keep them informed of any positive cases in your household that would impact student attendance.
Along with requesting your partnership, I also want to share our hopes for the future. We would like to return to a typical school day by the end of April. To that end, we have begun preparing for the fulfillment of that hope. However, please know, that I will be working closely with our local health officials, our administration, the Board of Education, and our staff to determine if that hope will become a reality. No decision has been made at this point. We will continue to monitor the health of the district and community. We will continue to take precautions and strive for sanitization of spaces within our buildings. We will continue our work, but again, the decision will rest upon the results of the choices and precautions made by our families.
If you must travel, use common sense, take precautions, and quarantine before returning to school. We look forward to healthy and successful weeks following spring break so we can return to a typical school day later this spring. Therefore, if your child(ren) or someone in your family is experiencing any signs of illness, please stay home and stream into the classroom. Take advantage of this opportunity to adjust learning to ensure your health and the health of others.
I sincerely hope that you and yours enjoy the sunshine and the season. We can do this! We are so close, but we need to continue to support each other. The old adage that “Patience is a virtue” is about to be tested. We need your patience, your vigilance, and your commitment so that the “good things that come to those who wait” can be enjoyed by all. Don’t give up those healthy habits and smart precautions yet! Good things and possibilities are around the corner for us. Let's continue to work together and make it happen! Remember, we are Roxbury Strong!
Yours in Education,
Loretta L. Radulic, Superintendent of Schools

Franklin Elementary School
Holds 2nd Annual Sock Drive
Franklin Elementary School held its second annual “Fox in Socks” Sock Drive this year during Read Across America Week, March 1st through March 5th, to benefit Roxbury Social Services. The Sock Drive was organized by Franklin School’s ISL Reading Teacher, Kathy Diaz.
As Mrs. Diaz was watching a television program, she realized that people donate all kinds of clothes and you never see anyone donating any socks. Socks are considered a basic need. Her daughter then did some volunteer work and noticed the same thing. There were no socks donated. So Mrs. Diaz decided to create the drive during Read Across America Week to do just that, collect socks for people who need them.
The connection to the story “Fox in Socks” is one of Mrs. Diaz’s favorite Dr. Seuss books with rich rhyming words and fun illustrations of socks!
“What better way to do that than to wear your favorite pair of bright, bold, striped, and mismatched socks and share a pair,” shared Diaz.
Last year’s Sock Drive was just before the district closed due to the pandemic. They were able to donate though a large bag of socks to Roxbury Social Services.
This year, Mrs. Diaz was granted approval to run the drive again from Franklin Principal Lisa Ferrare and the amount of socks doubled!
Students, staff, and faculty donated socks for children and adults, from white to spots, to ducks, to stripes! What a great way to give back to the community and share a pair of socks! Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".

Water Pollution and Local Hunger at the Forefront of Franklin Early Act
Franklin Elementary School’s Early Act Club was been busy this past March completing two service projects, one to help the community and the other to inform.
Early Act Club is an elementary student version of Rotary and the club completes local, national, and global service.
Most recently, its young members chose to inform the public about water pollution as an area in our world to help. Students researched the topic by viewing a documentary and then compiled a list of ways people can help stop water pollution and the reasons why. Early Act Club Advisor Jen Maurer used Flipgrid to create a public service announcement video featuring the club members. She edited the clips together to make a YouTube video that was then shared with all Franklin students, staff, and families to help make a difference and educate others about water pollution. Check it out here!
Early Act members also wanted to help out their fellow man and chose local hunger as another important cause. The students collaborated during an online club meeting to design a digital flyer for a Franklin School Food Drive. Their efforts produced a total of 523 food items collected to help Roxbury families in need through Roxbury Social Services. Click here to read this story on our website under "In the News".

Lake Hopatcong Foundation:
Help us with a little Spring Cleaning
When debris—plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, etc.—is tossed on the ground, it can get washed into storm drains and end up in our waterways. In addition to being unsightly, litter can harm aquatic life and decrease oxygen levels in the water when it decays. If we each take some time to clean up our communities, we can make a BIG difference. If you're itching to get a little spring cleaning done, below are two cleanups that will get you outside in the spring weather and protect our watershed at the same time. Happy spring cleaning!
Musconetcong Watershed Association's Annual River Cleanup
Saturday, April 17, 2021 beginning at 9:00 am
Each spring, the Musconetcong Watershed Association organizes a river cleanup that draws hundreds of volunteers to remove trash at various locations along the Musconetcong River, from Lake Hopatcong to the Delaware River confluence. The Lake Hopatcong Foundation is pleased to assist this effort each year by coordinating the Hopatcong State Park portion of the cleanup. Hopatcong State Park is location #1 on the river cleanup map and you can join us for this cleanup by registering HERE. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Masks will be required when in groups.
LHF Adopt-A-Spot Community Cleanup
Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 8:30 - 10 am
We hope you will join us to pick up roadside debris along Mt. Arlington Boulevard in support of Roxbury’s Adopt-A-Road Program and in celebration of Earth Week. In just a quick 90 minutes, we usually make a huge difference! No registration is necessary for this event, simply meet us on Mt. Arlington Boulevard in front of the Nixon School (275 Mt Arlington Blvd., Landing) at 8:30 am. Please park your vehicles along the road in front of the school. Gloves, trash bags, and vests will be provided. Masks will be required when in groups. Click here to read about these events from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.
Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.
We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.
Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

NJ Human Services Extends COVID-19 Child Care Assistance Programs Through End of School Year
The state will be extending several COVID-19-related child care assistance programs for families and providers through the end of June 2021. As part of the public health emergency, the state launched the New Jersey School-Age Tuition Assistance Program to help families pay for care for their school-age child in need of child care as a result of COVID-19 remote learning schools schedules.
For families who have been approved for School-Age Tuition Assistance, payments for your child’s care will now continue through June 30, 2021. No new applications are being accepted.
If you need help paying for child care, you can apply for the state’s Child Care Subsidy Program. To give you a sense of whether you would be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy Program, the income maximum for a family of four is $52,400 annually. Use our calculator to see if you are likely to be eligible or visit our parent page to learn more about this program. If you need help finding child care, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) Agency. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov.
