January 2021
Virtual Kansas Day 2021
This month's Virtual Classroom features The Santa Fe Trail. It is for intermediate students.

This Nearpod.com lesson can be teacher led or self-paced for students. It begins by placing the Santa Fe Trail into historical context. Using primary sources, students learn about the Santa Fe Trail, who used it, and why. Interactive quizzes and open-ended questions allow the students to analyze the material to determine the role the Santa Fe Trail played in the development of the United States.
On January 29, 2021 Kansas will celebrate its 160th birthday! Traditionally, the Kansas Historical Society offers Kansas Day events for schools and the public at the Kansas Museum of History, the State Capitol, and several historic sites. While it is not possible to celebrate in person this January, resources are available to help you create your own unique Kansas Day experience.

2021 is also the bicentennial of the Santa Fe Trail. Traders, freighters, gold seekers heading to Pikes Peak, and the military all used the Santa Fe Trail between 1821 and 1880. Our state has a strong connection because the majority of the trail passed through Kansas.
Kansas Day will be here soon and what better way to celebrate our state’s 160th birthday than with a game of Kansas Bingo? Play in person or virtually. The game highlights state symbols, famous Kansans, the State Capitol, Bleeding Kansas, and much more. Be sure to share some of the fun facts when calling the game.
Virtual Tours
Are you missing field trips? We are too! The Kansas Museum of History is currently closed for in-person visits. However, we are pleased to offer guided virtual tours on many of the same topics offered previously. These live tours are broadcast using Zoom or Zoom Webinar. Tours may be viewed on one screen by a group, or students may sign in individually from remote locations.

Our staff can tailor each tour to meet your needs in 30- to 60-minute tours at $30 each. Tours require a reservation made two weeks in advance. Register online at kshs.education@ks.gov or call 785-272-8681 x415.
