Local Democrats Endorse

Candidates for State Senate and House Districts

Responsible. Respectful. Inclusive. These are words that describe Democratic Party endorsements for local state senate and house seats in 2022, neighbors who imagine better Greenwich, and a bright future. They are:

·  Trevor Crow, candidate for the 36th Senatorial District

·  Rachel Khanna, for the 149th House District

·  Incumbent Steve Meskers, representing the 150th House District

·  Hector Arzeno, for the 151st House District

Each brings extensive individual qualifications to their candidacy, but all share our Democratic values: preserving our democracy, governing with compassion, and a commitment to equality for all. This is vitally important to guaranteeing our rights and improving our unique community during these pivotal times.

They will deliver. “Helping constituents and nonprofits through the last two years has reaffirmed my commitment to serving others,” said Meskers, who is seeking a third term in office. “If elected, I will bring the full measure of my skills to bear as we seek to overcome the fiscal and social damage this pandemic has brought to our state.”

They will secure state investment in our community, and shoreline resiliency. “Our current representative continually votes against our values,” said Khanna, who is a former member of the Representative Town Meeting, a small business owner, and an author. “Through responsible investment in our state’s growth and protection of our shared values, our state can be a place of great opportunity for everyone.”

They are neighbors and believe we should act that way to each other, despite our differences. “Everyone deserves dignity and respect,” said Hector Arzeno, who serves on three RTM committees, local organizations and retired after 35 years as an international finance executive, “whether it is the right to live in a decent home, to go to school free from harassment and gun violence.”

They will defend reproductive freedom. “I will fight tooth and nail to defend this fundamental right,” said Crow, a career therapist who also has a Harvard MBA. “It is unconscionable that my daughters and granddaughter might have to limit where in America they live to be treated as equals in society.”

“And importantly, they are fiscally prudent,” said GTDC Chair Joe Angland, in announcing the endorsements. “Two of them are leaders in finance, and the other two small business owners. They will be voices for enhancing the state’s attractiveness to business and laser-focused on the needs of the town.”

Additional information will be updated periodically on the DTC’s website.

Statement on the Uvalde Texas shooting

We are horrified by the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that senselessly took the lives of innocent children and teachers. This comes only a week after ten people were shot and killed in a racially motivated mass shooting in Buffalo, New York.

Gun violence is a uniquely American problem and it is, sadly, far too easy to get desensitized and numb to the carnage. We cannot afford to let that happen — too much is at stake.

Thanks to our Democratic elected officials, Connecticut has passed strong, common-sense gun safety laws that make us one of the safest states in the country. But our work is far from over and we cannot get complacent.

The November election is six months away and everything we do between now and then will impact the outcome. We must take our outrage, sadness, and anger and harness it into action to ensure we elect candidates that will prioritize gun violence prevention legislation.

       Let's get to work.

Local News

Student behavioral and mental health problems have increased sharply since the pandemic. According to a recent article in Greenwich Time, bullying, self-harm and other behavioral incidents rose by 59% just in the last year. Democrats in Hartford recognized the youth mental health crisis as the defining issue of the session and passed three bills, described in this CT Mirror article, setting aside federal grant money to expand access to and boost mental health services for children.

Here’s how our Greenwich delegation voted:

Rep. Steve Meskers (D) and Rep: Harry Arora (R) voted for all three bills.

Sen. Ryan Fazio (R) voted for two out of three of the bills.

Rep. Kimberly Fiorello (R) voted against two of the three bills.

State Updates

CT’s balance book is in good shape and steadily improving,

writes Sean Goldrick:

“ Indeed, we rank similarly to other major states, debt service remains stable relative to the budget, and state-level debt issuance has been reduced steadily for several years.”

Federal Updates

"What are we doing? Why are you here? If not to solve a problem as existential as this. This isn't inevitable. These kids weren't unlucky. This only happens in this country and nowhere else. Nowhere else do little kids go to school and think they might get shot that day."

ICYMI: Senator Chris Murphy gave a passionate speech on the Senate floor in response to the Uvalde shooting and called for his Republican colleagues to work with Democrats to pass gun violence prevention legislation.

Fiorello's Gun Violence Solution is a Nothingburger

By Jackie Kaiko: “This session, [Fiorello] was one of only four legislators who voted against an act allowing the use of Federal money to track illegally sold or used firearms in the state. Fiorello also voted against the establishment of a community gun violence and prevention program.” Read the full letter here.
