IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!
What will you do this week for FAFSA success?
Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to the third issue of DCAN In-Depth , a monthly newsletter diving deep into the world of FAFSA !

It's the final count down for FAFSA 2020! Every year millions of FREE dollars are left on the table because students and parents do not complete the FAFSA.

Just six days remain to get FAFSA applications submitted by the March 1st state deadline - what can YOU do to help bring these final students over the finish line? Read on...

Thank you for your work in promoting a college-going culture in Detroit!

Sincerely,

Dr. Ashley Johnson
Executive Director, DCAN
HOW WE'RE DOING
A look at our goals and current data
Detroit's March FAFSA goal is simple:

70% completion by July 1

As of Feb. 14, we are at 45% completion . Together, we can meet the 55% March 1 completion goal - that's only 541 more applications!

Let's do this.

FAFSA SPOTLIGHT
Jassadi Moore: AdviseMI College Adviser at
Detroit Cristo Rey High School
What's Jassadi's Secret to an 85% Completion Rate?

"I am serving in my second year as the College Adviser at Detroit Cristo Rey High School. I choose to work in education because this has always been highly valued throughout my life. The reason I am so passionate about education is because there have been so many sacrifices made for me to become a first generation college graduate in my family.

I’m able to assist seniors during the entire college process in our College Readiness 12 classes. I check the progress of seniors FAFSA completion status and work one on one with students and families to get it done. The College Counseling team hosts several FAFSA events where we use the computer lab to assist families with their applications.

The best practice I have would be my tracking system and holding students accountable for sending me their information by making it a requirement for the College Readiness 12 classes. I think if schools could enforce some type of graduation requirement for the FAFSA it would be very beneficial because it would make it more of a priority."

DCAN Shout-Out: During College Application Month, Detroit Cristo Rey had all 83 of their seniors to submit 567 college applications. That's an average of about 6.83 applications completed per student! Detroit Cristo Rey went above and beyond the three applications per student goal set for college application month. Way to go!
