The Lion's Roar
**Families- Please watch for a letter from Fr. Gibson later this week regarding returning to school on Monday.

Dear SJPS Families,

Our 8th Grade Leaders were presented with their jackets on September 3rd after Mass and Benediction. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with these fine young leaders over the last several days. These students will lead our school in so many ways this year! I am excited to see how they continue to grow! I've asked our young learners to say hello if they see them in the hallways or as we transition at lunch/recess.

At our Parent Event, our School Advisory Commission (SAC) presented the different committees and volunteer opportunities for all of our families. A special thank you to the committee chairs who helped everyone understand what the SAC is all about and how it helps our school.

If you are looking for service hours, one area that I could use additional help is lunchroom and recess supervision. It this interests you, let me know and I will hold a very short training for all interested. It is a fun way to be involved with your child's school day!

In the 2019-2020 school year, we adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) after attending training from the I Love You Guys Foundation. The Standard Response Protocol is based on five simple actions that can be used based on the incident it reflects. The language is simple and can easily be utilized within the school, church, and other areas in the event of an emergency. The five actions are Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate and Shelter.

This information is shared in the classroom and in the school. Some of the students should be familiar with the terminology from last year. Our hope is to have you, as parents, also work with your children at a level that is comfortable for them. It is important they know the action words.

We encourage you to explore the iloveyouguys.org website. Read the parent information sheet attached. Here is a link the website.

We will start working in school on the first two actions, Hold and Secure.

HOLD "In Your Classroom or Area”

Students will be trained to:
  • Clear the hallways and remain in their area or room until the “All Clear” is announced.
  • Do business as usual.

Adults and staff are trained to:
  • Close and lock the door
  • Account for students and adults
  • Do business as usual

SECURE: “Get inside. Lock outside doors”
Students are trained to:
  • Return to inside of building
  • Do business as usual

Adults and staff are trained to:
  • Bring everyone indoors
  • Lock the outside doors
  • Increase situational awareness
  • Account for students and adults
  • Do business as usual

The SRP is simple and actionable. Five specific actions are communicated and performed during an incident. Each action is labeled with a “Term of Art” and is followed by a “Directive.” Execution of the action is performed by all active participants, including students, staff, teachers and first responders. This aligns everyone for a swift and coordinated response.

Please take the time to explore the SRP at www.iloveyouguys.org. This is an amazing foundation. Its mission is Kindness, Community, and Responsibility.

Thank you for supporting our faculty and staff at St. Jerome Parish School.

Sincerely in Christ,

Mary Johnson
