Superintendent's Message

Dear South Bay Parents/Guardians and Community Members,

We are currently seeking parents to serve as active members of our Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) Parent Advisory Committee. A  key part of the LCAP process is the opportunity for engagement by all stakeholders. Staff, teachers, administrators, bargaining partners, community members, parents/guardians, and students (including foster youth, homeless families, and those from low-income and English learner communities) are to be consulted to provide feedback on the plan.

South Bay is establishing our LCAP Parent Advisory Committee, per Education Code 52062 and 52063, to review and comment on our LCAP. As a member of this team, participants will have the opportunity to review the draft LCAP and provide insight and comment related to the actions, services, and supports for students and families. The Parent Advisory Committee will meet three times, from March until June 2020.  This is an important place for your voice to contribute to the overall goals and actions of the District. If you are interested in serving, please contact Randea Hinojosa for details and meeting dates.

Thank you for your consideration and for helping to make South Bay an outstanding place to live, work, and learn!

Sincerely,

Katie McNamara

School Spotlight - Emory Academy

On February 6, the third grade students at the Emory Academy participated in the Global Cardboard Challenge. This annual event is inspired by the short film, Caine's Arcade, and is a worldwide celebration of creativity. The Challenge engages students in creativity, innovation, resourcefulness, perseverance, and teamwork. Congratulations to all the participants!

School Spotlight - Imperial Beach Charter

On January 29, a Science Workshop for K-6 students was held in the Imperial Beach Charter library. The Workshop was a cooperative effort with the UCSD Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment & Teaching Excellence (CREATE). The mission of CREATE is to engage  students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) at an early age to help develop their STEM identity, reinforce their sense of belonging, and influence their decision to pursue higher education and STEM careers. The students, parents, and staff had a great time!

School Spotlight - Nestor Language Academy

On Friday, February 14, students from the Nestor Language Academy participated in two middle school finals for soccer and basketball.

The girl's soccer team fought hard in the final, but came up short against Eastlake. The team was undefeated during the regular season, against schools with more than 1,500 middle school students. Regardless of the outcome of the last game, they are champions!

The boy's basketball team are the South Bay Champions!  They defeated Arroyo Vista (the number one team) 35-31 in the final. Great job!

Thank you to everyone that attended the games. Kudos to Ms. Munoz and Ms. Rodriguez who spent countless hours coaching the Nestor cheerleaders, who supported the football team last season and the basketball team all season long.

Congratulations to the Nestor teams!
