VISUAL RESOURCES FOR LENT

TREE OF LIFE

My collection of free liturgical visual art resources for Year A Lent employs a Tree of Life graphic that complements Marty Haugen's lovely Lenten hymn,

Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery (Evangelical Lutheran Worship #334). This hymn infuses the weekly scripture texts with mindfulness of the formation, reformation, and transformation made possible through our baptisms into Christ.

The collection includes editable design templates for a banner, a projection graphic, a bulletin cover, and social media posts, as well as an editable text document for a sample Gathering Rite. Congrega- tions are encouraged to localize the templates and documents for their context. Congregations are also encouraged to use the collection as a starting point for developing additional applications to meet their specific needs.

RESERVOIR EXHIBITION

I'm honored that two of my works have been selected for inclusion in Reservoir, an exhibition scheduled for February 8 through April 3 at the Intersect Arts Center in Saint Louis, MO.

Curated by Sarah Bernhardt, this exhibition

of visual and performance-based artworks explores the dynamic of work and rest, using these words of Bernard of Clairvaux: "The man who is wise, therefore, will see his life as more like a reservoir than a canal. The canal simultaneously pours out what it receives; the reservoir retains the water till it is filled, then discharges the overflow without loss to itself." In the exhibition catalog, Bernhardt describes the exhibition as "a compendium of collective wisdom, struggle, reflection, suggestion, healing, and hope as all live out the precarious counterpoise of work and rest."

My included works are "Labor of Love," a three-dimensional sculpture that references the aesthetic of an ancient Japanese technique known as boro to image Creator God as laborer, and "Sabbath Rest: Sand, Sun, Sea," an oversized kimono form created from soil-erosion cloth stitch-woven with fibers of various materials, weights, textures, and finishes.
