The Deep Kindness Book Club kicks off this Thursday and the whole school is invited to join. As I've mentioned in the past, we’ll be reading "Deep Kindness" by CharacterStrong co-founder, Houston Kraft. Considered a “revolutionary guide,” we will gain a profound understanding of kindness and commit to its practice to foster connection and belonging at Roy Cloud. To get things going, middle school student Christina Sarles, from our Kindness elective mentioned below in the Thunderbolt, will be reading from the book this Thursday! Best of all, author Houston Kraft will join us for our not-to-miss March meeting!
The book club will meet at my Principal's Meetup today (at 4:00 pm) and then monthly on the fourth Thursday until May 28th. I still have three books to give away to the next three people to contact me.
Also mark your calendar for February 4th at 4:00 pm for our next SEL parent education night where you can learn to use the tools from the Kindness Campaign in your own home to combat worry, isolation, low motivation, and more.
I hope to see you at today's meetup. Here's the Zoom link.
Kindly,
Diane

Grades K-5 Jump for Cloud Next Week!
Help the PTO energize our K-5 students with a fun jumping jack competition…no equipment needed! Taking place next week, here’s how the competition will work:
- Monday-Friday, Jan 25-29, each student does as many jumping jacks per day as they can and keeps track
-
Parents and/or students log their jumping jacks in a Jump Tracker form (daily or at the end of the week)
- Students in the winning class for each grade will get a jump-worthy prize with their next supplies packet!
-
Tag your action photos with #jumpforcloud and send them to [email protected] for inclusion in the Thunderbolt

SEL CURRICULUM UPDATE
Kindness Elective
The middle school students of Mr. McAdams’s Kindness Elective are excited to announce that the CharacterStrong 30 Days of Kindness campaign officially begins this week!
They have formed their committees and are creating a plan to run the campaign over the course of the second and third trimesters. Each week, they will announce one or two acts of kindness for the whole school. We hope that students, teachers, and parents will share their experiences which can be posted to the school website where they are creating a web page devoted to the campaign. Join the campaign, help spread kindness everywhere!

STEAM Update from Ms. Kwa
Our engineers are hard at work! We're applying the Engineering Design Process as students learn about user experience research through conducting empathy interviews with their stuffed animals. What makes a face mask wearable, more comfortable, and allows our friends to participate in daily activities? They created custom face masks to keep their friends safe, all while coming up with creative ways to measure and remind each other to stay 6 feet apart! Check out some of their unique solutions:
