Summit Learning
What Makes Up Your Child's Grades?
With Summit Learning, students are graded on how well they comprehend concepts and can apply what they’ve learned. Rather than simply memorizing information, students focus on developing a strong grasp of class material and effective application of key skills. This sets them up to succeed both within the classroom and beyond.

The main factors that determine students’ grades:
Cognitive Skills - like communication, critical thinking, and articulating a clear point—are at the core of your child’s learning. Cognitive Skills are graded based on how well students apply them to projects.

Focus Areas - ensure that students develop foundational content knowledge of a given subject area. Students demonstrate that they’ve grasped the subject matter by completing and passing Content Assessments. Note that students can take Content Assessments as many times as needed. This ensures that they move on only when they gain a full understanding of the subject.

Portfolio Problems - are math problems that accompany each Math Unit. Portfolio Problems apply to math courses only. They’re scored based on how well students apply what they’ve learned to solve complex math problems.

Unit Assessments - are the final assessments for each Math Unit. Unit Assessments apply to math courses only. They include a range of Portfolio Problems learned throughout a Math Unit.

Panorama Survey
Dear Families,

In order to learn more about student experiences at school, we will be asking for your child’s feedback via an online survey they will be completing during school time. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes to complete.

Students in grades 3-12 will answer questions that encourage them to reflect on their own skills, beliefs, competencies, and relationships related to social emotional learning (SEL). Focusing on social emotional learning and creating a safe, supportive, and equitable learning environment is a priority for Fairview Park City Schools and Ohio Department of Education (ODE). Please see ODE’s website for more information regarding SEL.

The first Panorama survey administration for the 2020-2021 school year will take place between November 9 and November 20. The student survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The wording of survey questions is adjusted based on student age.
Students will answer questions about several priority topics:

  • growth mindset
  • social awareness
  • emotion regulation
  • self-management
  • positive feelings
  • challenging feelings
  • supportive relationships

The survey will be managed by a third party, Panorama Education. We are asking that all of our students in grades 3-12 participate in the surveys, as their feedback will provide valuable insights into their experiences and help us improve and adapt our district to their needs. Please note that district staff will not be able to see how your child responds to individual questions.  However, aggregate scores (based on how a student responds to several questions) will be available on a student level for some topics.

We welcome your questions about this process! If you would like to preview the survey, or have your child opt out of taking this survey, please contact your child’s school counselor.

Family and Community Engagement (FACE)
Hello Fairview Park Families!

I hope the Red Ribbon Week was fun for all AND promoted some family discussions! At the MS/HS we had a visit from the McIntyre Center. In fact, I sat down with JD Deir and talked to him about what services they offer. Listen to the interview here.

Last week I enclosed some resources regarding alcohol - this week, I have some resources on Drugs and Vaping.

Parents, mentors and peers can make a difference just by talking to the young people in their lives about drug use. Please Start Talking!

Parent Action on Drugs has a range of resources for parents to approach the issues related to alcohol, marijuana and other drugs with their children.

As always - Please call your child's counselor, teacher or principal if you have any concerns about your child using. We can help you get the help needed to get your child back on track.

Last year at this time we had a presentation from the Improbable Players. You have an opportunity to watch a free zoom presentation on two community shows on November 16th and 18th at 5pm. Zoom Link
This would be a great time to watch with your child to "Start the Talk!"
