Ed Department: More Students Being Served Under IDEAs Article
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

The number of American schoolchildren receiving special education services is on the rise and they're increasingly being served in mainstream classrooms at least part of the day.

More than 6.1 million students across the country ages 6 to 21 - or 9.2 percent of all kids - were served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2017, the most recent year for which data is available. That's up from 8.6 percent of children in 2008.

In Lab, An Antidepressant Shown to Harm Baby Neurons
[Source:  Psych Central]

Fetuses exposed to the common antidepressant paroxetine (Paxil and Seroxat) may experience harmful effects to the brain, according to a new lab study at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

For the study, the researchers used stem-cell-derived "mini-brains," miniature human brain models, developed with human cells and barely visible to the human eye, whose cellular mechanisms mimic those of the developing human brain.

In a new study published in the journal Neuron, a multidisciplinary team showed how brain networks unique to each child can predict cognition. The study is the first to show that functional neuroanatomy can vary greatly among kids, and is refined during development.

Autism Eye Scan Could Lead to Early Detection
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

A new eye scan could help identify autism in children years earlier than currently possible.
The non-invasive eye scan utilises a hand-held device to find a pattern of subtle electrical signals in the retina that are different in children on the autism spectrum, which are directly linked to differences in their brain development.

The scan was tested on about 180 people with and without autism between the ages of 5 and 21 in collaboration with Yale University in the US, University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital in the UK, as part of a study published in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

SLP Corner:   Using Your Cell Phone Photos as Speech Tx Story Starters
by Erik Raj, M.S., CCC-SLP

What is one thing that all of us speech-language pathologists have in common? If you answered that we're all awesome, you're right, but that's not exactly the response I was looking for, haha! The one commonality that I believe we all share is the fact that we all have a cell phone in our pockets. And I am willing to bet that not only does your cell phone house the phone numbers of your favorite contacts, but it also contains a massive amount

Autism Corner: Why "High Functioning" Autism Is So Challenging

By  Lisa Jo Rudy, Autism Spectrum Disorders Expert

The autism spectrum is very large.  If you think of it as a rainbow (or a bell curve), you'll note that there's an awful lot of the spectrum that is at neither one end nor the other - but somewhere in the middle.  At this point in history, we don't have good information to tell us whether MOST people on the autism spectrum are "somewhere in the middle," but it is
