Hearsay Pays a Key Role in How Children Perceive Others, New Study Finds
[Source: Medical X-Press]

Hearsay plays a key role in how children perceive people outside their circle, even though they may have no other information or evidence about these people, according to Vanderbilt research published in Child Development.

Jonathan D. Lane, assistant professor of psychology and human development at Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development, is lead investigator of an innovative study that involved 150 children ages 4-9. He and his team, including graduate student Emily Conder, measured the impact of negative messages provided

Brain Differences Detected in Children With Depressed Parents
[Source: Medical X-Press]

The largest brain imaging study of children ever conducted in the United States has revealed structural differences in the brains of those whose parents have depression.

Depression is a common and debilitating mental health condition that typically arises during adolescence. While the causes of depression are complex, having a parent with depression is one of the biggest known risk factors. Studies have consistently shown that adolescent children of parents with depression are two to three times more likely to develop depression than those with no parental history of depression. However, the brain mechanisms that underlie this familial risk are unclear.

How the Brain Detects the Rhythms of Speech
[Source:  Science Daily]

Neuroscientists have discovered how the listening brain scans speech to break it down into syllables. The findings provide for the first time a neural basis for the fundamental atoms of language and insights into our perception of the rhythmic poetry of speech.

For decades, speech neuroscientists have looked for evidence that neurons in auditory brain areas use fluctuations in speech volume to identify the beginnings and ends of syllables - like a lin-guis-tics pro-fes-sor di-a-gram-ming a sen-tence. So far, these efforts have met with little luck.

December Read Alouds for Speech Therapy
[Source: Crazy Speech World]

December doesn't have enough school days for me to use all of the books I want to use!  There are so many great read alouds to use this month, but I only chose 4 to share with you today.  I tried to vary the themes, I don't want to do all Christmas stuff this month because I have students that don't celebrate, so I went with one Christmas, a couple of winter, and gingerbread!

Thank You, Liz Gretz for answering our "challenge" to come up with culturally diverse therapy activities!

Heidi Kay over at PediaStaff, challenged some bloggers to create therapy activities related to Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.  While the activity I came up with is pretty simple in nature, it was a really great motivator.  These chain links can be used in a couple different ways.

Peds Therapy Corner: What Teachers Should Know About Dysgraphia
[Source:  Edutopia]

Jeremiah is a student in my second-grade intervention classroom. He's verbally expressive, full of positive energy, and eager to please. He's been sent to me because benchmark assessments reveal he's below grade level in reading.

Once he's in my classroom, a more pressing issue comes to light. If Jeremiah is slightly below grade level in reading, he is significantly below it in writing. He's nearly 8 years old, and his letters are not uniform, his spelling is inaccurate, and written tasks are laborious for him. I also note the social-emotional effects when he's writing: This energetic, social boy melts into a quiet anxiety, twisting his hair and not making eye contact.
