February 10 “Spying on the South: An Odyssey Across the American Divide”  by Tony Horwitz.  Horwitz retraces Frederick Law Olmsted, (the great 19th century landscape architect, best know for designing New York’s Central Park) through his travels in the South. Horwitz rightly prides himself on being a curious and empathetic freestyle conversationalist- a gift that Olmsted apparently shared. Traveling south and west by car, steamboat, and even mule in advance of the 2016 primary season, Horwitz wants to gauge what Olmsted called “the drift of things” in America.   .

All members are invited to participate!

AAUW FL Lobby Days: Advocate from, Home!
Mary Ann Sines and Patricia Ross attended AAUW FL Lobby Days along with over 30 members from 13 branches. We met with legislators to advocate for the Fair Pay Protection Act, Paid Family Leave, Human Trafficking Bills and Equal Rights from Men and Women. Advocacy is an important part of AAUW's mission. The AAUW Florida Public Policy Committee has an urgent request for your advocacy in the pay equity area, and you don't even have to leave home! We need you to write a physical letter or email from your own address next week if possible. The Florida legislative session is short and committees will stop meeting in a few weeks.

Here is a summary of the bill in question (House Bill 739 and Senate Bill 90)
It provides the following protections:
·         Employers can’t retaliate against individuals involved in legal proceedings to enforce the law
·         Employers can’t retaliate against employees who discuss wages
·         Employers can’t reduce another employee’s pay to comply
·         Employers can’t request salary history
·         Employers can’t provide less favorable career opportunities based on sex
In addition, employer defenses are clarified: they must be job-related and agreement for a lesser wage is not a defense. The law, if passed, would apply to all employees including those covered by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (which has fewer protections).

Not many bills filed in the Florida legislature become law, or even make it to the floor of one of the chambers. The first step in this process is for the bill to be reported favorably out of the first committee to which it is assigned. Usually, bills are assigned to two to three committees, all of which must report favorably in order before the bill can reach the floor of the House or Senate.

The Public Policy Committee is asking you to put forth a special effort this year to persuade Representative Heather Fitzenhagen, chair of the Business and Professions Subcommittee in the House, to schedule a hearing for House Bill 739.

Attached are some  Talking Points   which were shared with legislators and some  Further Talking Points on the Equal Pay Protection Act

Write:
·         I am requesting a hearing in the Business and Professions Subcommittee for HB 739, Discrimination in Labor and Employment. (this doesn't have to come first--use your own thoughts, but do include it somewhere).
·         Include some of the talking points in the attached document.
·         Thank the Chair/Vice Chair/Speaker for their attention and work for the people of Florida.

Please write to Chair Fitzenhagen, Vice Chair Mariano, and Speaker Olivia as listed below.

AAUW Branches Award STEM Scholarship
The Daytona Beach, Flagler, and New Smyrna branches of American Association of University Women (AAUW), through their partnership with Daytona State College, awarded Ms. Florence Small their 2020 S.T.E.M. Scholarship. Since 2014, these branches have worked together to offer women attending Daytona State College a $750.00 scholarship so they may pursue Science Technology Engineering and Mathematical (S.T.E.M.) related educational and career opportunities. This year’s recipient exemplifies the pursuit of a S.T.E.M. career while setting an example for the next generation.

When asked for her reaction as this year’s S.T.E.M. scholarship recipient, Florence Small replied, “I have wonderfully nurturing parents who have given me opportunities in life that I would never have had from where I started. They have encouraged me and fostered a great work ethic which has made me an invaluable employee in my current healthcare career with key attributes include having a positive attitude, pushing to learn new skills and being willing to stretch beyond the scope of a job description with flexibility and confidence in my abilities. I greatly appreciate this being instilled in me and that I can bring it to my new career in engineering. I enjoy time with my children, family and friends who consistently reinforce my need to grow and learn what life has to offer.”

Florence Small is a physical therapist assistant who has worked many years to help others regain their independence. To regain her own independence, she chose S.T.E.M. as her path toward greater self-determination through continued education and a career in electrical engineering. Ms. Small currently attends the Advanced Technology Campus on the main campus of Daytona State College. Her immediate goal is to complete her Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology and graduate this spring. Long-term plans include securing a better-paying job, one that possibly merges her medical and engineering career, and providing an economically secure future for her and her three children. Just as her parents provided her with a solid foundation, Small is determined to pass down that same dedication, discipline, and work ethic to her children.

The financial support of corporate sponsors, AAUW branches and generous individuals are needed each year to make a girl’s dream dream of attending a Tech Trek camp a reality! The only cost to the girls selected to attend a camp is a $50 registration fee. Camp would not be possible without volunteers to assist teachers, serve as camp staff, assist with hands-on workshops, field trips, special events, and reach out to Florida communities to enlist the help of corporations and female STEM role models. Tech Trek Florida is a project of the AAUW Florida Supporting Foundation, Inc. Please make checks payable to the AAUW Florida Supporting Foundation, Inc . with Tech Trek noted in the memo line. Mail to Tech Trek, AAUW Florida Supporting Foundation, PO Box 2938, Jupiter, FL 33468.  Contributions to the camps are income tax-deductible.
