Nesting Season 2020 Update
|
|
When excavating a sea turtle nest, permitted volunteers count, sort and record data about each egg found in the nest.
|
|
SAT permitted volunteers are smiling under those masks, celebrating another successful hatch!
|
|
Mama sea turtles will go the extra step in hiding her nests to ensure her babies aren't in danger during incubation.
|
|
NOTE: ONLY those trained and permitted by the FWCC may conduct post hatch excavations.
It is illegal to disturb, touch or dig up turtle nests, eggs and hatchlings.
|
|
Sea turtle nesting season here in the fabulous Florida Keys has slowed down quite a bit during the month of August. No new nests to report which is fairly typically for the Keys. However, a handful of successful nests were excavated by Save A Turtle Permitted volunteers in the lower keys over the last month and all data was recorded and sent to the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission. Volunteers will continue to monitor the beaches until October 31st, when nesting season typically draws to a close. As always, we want to extend a big thanks to all of our dedicated walkers & donors for all your support! Flippers Up!

|
Watch our volunteers do what they do best...finding a sea turtle nest and rescuing 2 babies trapped in the nest during the post hatch excavation. Bonus footage of the babies making their way to the water the evening they hatched!

We Love Gigi's Creations!
|
|
Hello!!
”I’m Gianna, a.k.a Gigi. I am 9 years old from Brooklyn, NY. I started Gigi’s Creations about six months ago, during the quarantine. I started making bracelets to make other people smile. I don’t know how many bracelets we have sold, but I think it’s a big number. We sold 43 turtle bracelets. We have donated over $500 to different charities. I like helping others. I love sea turtles because it’s my favorite animal and reminds me of the beach. You can find Me (GIgi) on instagram @gigis_creations_8 and on a Facebook @ Gigi’s Creations. You can simply send us a message and we can help :) Besides making bracelets, me and my mom clean up the beach. I have a metal straw and me and my mom have reusable bags instead of plastic bags. I think your job is so cool. I like how you help sea turtles and clean up your beach!”
Thanks to Gigi and her fantastic customers, Gigi's Creations raised $167 from her special sea turtle bracelet fundraiser which she donated to Save A Turtle! Keep up the awesome work! You have brought many smiles to your turtle family!

In case you missed Shark Week
Shark Week was so exciting we thought we'd educate our subscribers on why we love sharks just as much as sea turtles
- Sharks do not have bones.
- Most sharks have good eye sight.
- Sharks skin feels similar to sand paper.
- Sharks first appeared in the ocean around 455 million years ago, making them one of the oldest living species on the planet.
- Scientists age sharks by counting the rings on their vertebrae.
- Each whale shark’s spot pattern is unique as a fingerprint.
- Different shark species reproduce in different ways.
-
Sharks are so tough, their embryos are known to attack one another. The largest embryo in a shark litter is known to eat its fellow embryos, in an act known as intrauterine cannibalism.
- There are almost 500 known species of sharks.
- While sharks live in all of the world's oceans, a few species are also known to inhabit freshwater lakes and rivers.

What is your name? Emma Haydocy
How old are you? 28
Where are you from? I grew up in Massachusetts and traveled across the country as a Park Ranger, which brought me to South Florida. I have been living in the Florida Keys for two years.
What do you do for a living? I am the Executive Director of Florida Bay Forever, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting, preserving, and improving Florida Bay.
What beach do you survey for sea turtle nesting season? I monitor Sea Oats Beach in Islamorada.
How many years have you volunteered for SAT? This is my second season volunteering with Save-A-Turtle.
What made your decide to become a beach walker? I decided to volunteer to be a beach walker because I am passionate about the environment. I fell in love with sea turtles as a child and have been lucky enough to volunteer for turtle monitoring operations at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

|
It seemed like an amazing opportunity to help protect a beloved endangered species in my Florida Keys backyard.
What is your favorite species of turtle and why? My favorite species of sea turtle is the Leatherback. I had the unique opportunity of assisting on the rescue of an entangled leatherback and they have been my favorite ever since!
Why do you love sea turtles? I love sea turtles because they are the ultimate underdog! The odds of survival are not in their favor, and yet they persist. The biological mechanisms that drive turtles to return to the same beaches and drive their migration are absolutely fascinating. Plus, they are so darn cute!
What is your best eco-friendly tip?My best eco-friendly tip is to eat more plants!
