LOST BOYS SPEAKER PRESENTATION

7th grade students read Lost Boy, Lost Girl: Escaping Civil War in Sudan. This book tells the incredible story about what these children endured when civil war engulfed Sudan during the 1980’s. This week, two members of the Lost Boys of Sudan came to SFX to discuss their experiences with our 7th grade students.

The gentlemen both commented positively on the SFX students. Across all of their many yearly school presentations, they observed that the students here at St. Francis Xavier are consistently attentive, well behaved, and ask great questions. We are so proud of our students.
CHANGES TO SIX FLAGS READ TO SUCCEED PROGRAM - NOW ENTIRELY DIGITAL!

Dear K-6 families,

As in years past, students in grades K-6 are invited to participate in the Six Flags Great America Read to Succeed Program. Students who read for 360 minutes will earn a free ticket to Great America.

This year Six Flags has gone entirely digital, and will no longer require a hard copy of your student's reading log to be submitted. I have attached a hard copy of the reading log so you can keep track of your child's reading before entering their minutes on the Six Flags website, but this is only for your personal tracking and may be discarded once you have entered the reading minutes online.

If your child would like to participate in this program, please follow these steps:

1. Register your student at sixflags.com/books
2. Use St. Francis Xavier School's code: JTFPE
(The prompt will actually ask you for your teacher's code, but you will enter the SFX code above)
3. Choose your child's teacher
Grades K-3: Choose your homeroom teacher
Grades 4-6: Choose your Language Arts teacher (4-Farley; 5-Stasaitis; 6-Pak)
4. Complete your registration by following the prompted questions
5. Fill out the online reading log for your student
6. Please have your child registered and their reading minutes entered by Monday, April 6
7. Great America tickets will be printed at school and handed out in May

Please contact me directly with any questions at kfilbin@sfxlg.org.
Happy reading,

Katie Filbin

Lenten Opportunity from the Catholic Identity Committee

For most Catholic adults, the Mass is a most familiar part of the Faith. But, that familiarity can prevent us from appreciation of and reflection on the “source and summit” of our faith life. "The Mass, led by Bishop Robert Barron, beautifully explains the Mass in detail: what we do, why, and the significance it has in our lives. It’s a long, complex prayer. Every movement, gesture, & response is Biblical, and/or traditional, and it all has meaning. As Catholic adults, we may not know the significance of all the details.

The Catholic Identity Committee of the SFX School Advisory Board will present this 6-episode series over three Monday nights in March.

Join us on March 9, 16, and 30th from 7:00pm-9:00pm in Unity Hall for DVD presentation and discussion.

Please RSVP to Katie Kanzer k.f.kanzer@gmail.com or Katy Newcomb katynewcomb@hotmail.com. Walk-ins are welcome---bring a friend!
PARENT ROSARY

THURSDAY, February 20, 8:15am
SFX CHAPEL (located next to Joyce Hall in the school)

Each week, we pray for the SFX students, families, faculty and staff.

This week, we will specifically be praying for the 2nd grade students as they prepare for their participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As always, bring your special intentions!

And remember, if….

  • You’ve never prayed a Rosary. (We’ll have a quick overview before we start the prayer.)
  • It’s been a while, and you may have forgotten how. (We pray in a group… no one will know if, “under pressure,” you forget the Our Father. TRUST me, it happens every week!)
  • You lost your rosary beads. (There are plenty of extra Rosary beads on-hand.)
  • You don’t have enough time. (Start slow. Pray a decade or two with us. It’s typically 15-20 minutes.)
  • Your little one(s) won’t sit still. (They are most welcome. There is room to wiggle. And kid-friendly activities are available.)
  • You just want to start praying. (At first glance, the Rosary is simply a prayer asking for Mary’s prayers. But, when we meditate on each mystery of Christ’s life, we learn that Mary is asking us to draw closer to her Son.)

Questions: contact Katie Kanzer k.f.kanzer@gmail.com or Karen Trayser karentrayser@yahoo.com.
